I bought a M10 and a Summilux 50. Yesterday I noticed that the front part of the barrel (the part that hold the filter) has come loose. It did not fall or hit anything hard.

Used a range of Nikon and Zeiss lenses over the years and never had one failing. I do take care that they are not bumped or anything.

Is the 50 Lux more fragile or is this just a case of bad luck? If it is more fragile, then I will take even more care to avoid any stress on the lens.

Will make a bit less convenient while travelling.

if the lens has not been dropped or banged up against something hard, this should never happen.  At 6 weeks old, I'd start by going back to the store you purchased it from.  Perhaps they'd exchange if for another one.   At 6 weeks old and fresh off a purchase over $10,000 from the dealer, they should be willing to exchange for you.  Worst case, you'd have to send to Leica for repair.   Not sure if you mentioned you had another lens so hopefully you don't have to send it off as you'd then be left with the M10 and no lens.   :(     Best of luck to you, hope it works out.

I should have added the build quality of all Leica Lenses is excellent.  I purchased my 50 Lux in 2012, brand new and have never had an issue with it.   Other lenses I have almost 30 years with no build quality issues.

I had to send a 28mm f2.8 Elmarit Asph to DAG when the front ring became loose. It was my fault for utilizing the mounted hood to assist in removing and mounting the lens due to there being so little real estate on the lens to grasp.

Now, I don't touch the hood when mounting and removing it.

Thank you. That sounds like an exception. No it was not banged or took a fall. I bought a 28 Elmarit, so I can still use the camera.

Tuesday the dealer will open again and I will contact them.

Thanks for the information. I read something similar some time ago and make sure I grab the 28 at the part near the camera.

The hood fell off of my brand new Summilux 50 after a month.  There's a thread about this issue on here.  It's not that uncommon.

The lens itself, the barrel and assembly, was rock solid.  But the hood assembly is secured by a single, tiny screw.

Thanks for the positive feedback on the lens. I could live with a hood falling off. :D

i had this s=issue with a 50mm Summilux Asph., but only after many years of use.  Simply needs tightening.

The lens was sent to Wetzlar, taken apart and rebuilt from scratch according to my Leica dealer. Feels solid now and the 50 is my favourite lens.

Understand this can happen after many years of use, but after two months of careful use I was a bit disappointed.

Most Leica lenses lead with various quality...maybe sharp maybe contrast. They are not all perfect...a long hang on romours.

But there is more to a lens than..for me I like the"feel" and movements, the modern high contrast lenses...are not for me...I can have that in my Fuji system.

A lens must do more, balance, a lot of indefinables for me.

OTOH i can see why users use what they adjust to...
