TheEyesHaveIt Posted April 15, 2017 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, Recently got a used (mint condition) Leica Q. Everything works perfectly, but one thing I've noticed is the hood doesn't seem to rotate fully when attaching it. What I mean is that when I screw on the hood, it stops before it is in the right position. It's off center / tilted compared to where it should be. I don't want to screw it further because I don't want to risk damaging something. I've tried screwing it on every possible way, but always ends up in the same position. Any ideas? Thanks! marchyman Posted April 15, 2017 Share #2 Posted April 15, 2017 There is an O-ring/gasket that needs some force to compress so the hood is in the proper location. The position of your hood is about where it takes more force to rotate. And while I doubt it is part of the problem I'd try putting the hood on after removing the filter just to be sure. TheEyesHaveIt Posted April 15, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted April 15, 2017 Thanks for the tip - I managed to screw it on properly after a few more cycles of loosening / tightening. Took a little more pressure (but hopefully nothing to damage the camera).
Leica Guy Posted April 16, 2017 Share #4 Posted April 16, 2017 I'd be careful with more pressure. The best suggestion I've heard even though it may seem a little weird, rub your finger on your nose or face and pick up a little skin oil Wipe the threads inside the hood and you'll see it makes a big difference. I know it sounds odd, but it does work.
TheEyesHaveIt Posted April 16, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted April 16, 2017 Thanks - I will try that. I realized the default hood might not be a great option for me given how hard it is to put on since I'll want to remove it frequently for ND filters / my LEE filter system. Is there another, aftermarket, less tight hood that folks recommend for the Q?
Leica Guy Posted April 16, 2017 Share #6 Posted April 16, 2017 I am happy continuing with the standard Q hood even though I do occasionally remove it to use an ND or polarizer filter. Once the threads and the O-ring have a little oil on them, it's really quite easy to remove and re-install.
Useink! Posted April 19, 2017 Share #7 Posted April 19, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, Just first like to say how delighted I am to have found this forum having purchased a new 'Q' only last week. Regarding fitting the hood, I too found the tightness and subsequent 'off-set' position a slight problem until I smeared the lens and hood threads with a smidgeon of oil (from behind my ears actually!) I've used this lubrication technique before for various applications and have found it to be a useful standby! I also note that when the hood is perfectly aligned on the front of the camera, a soft 'click' can be heard and the hood won't rotate further, serving to indicate that that it is seated correctly and symmetrically. A nice touch I thought and a reassurance that it's simply not possible to over-tighten the hood. 3
TheEyesHaveIt Posted April 20, 2017 Author Share #8 Posted April 20, 2017 I also was able to "fix" this with a touch of oil. Thanks for the advice all!

lhimelfarb@hotmail.com Posted July 29, 2019 Share #11 Posted July 29, 2019 I just received my new Q2. What a great camera! Anyway... thanks for the tips: natural oil, then a click. That was my only issue.

sturkel Posted July 30, 2019 Share #15 Posted July 30, 2019 Funny when I used to process film in the darkroom many yeras ago, I was taught using a bit of (face oil ) to remove scratches on the negative. Worked like a charm. 😀
Gethyn Posted August 2, 2019 Share #16 Posted August 2, 2019 My new Q2 came with the lens hood already attached. Trying to remove it to install a clear protection filter but it does not want to rotate. Do not want to damage it. Any suggestions?
alksv Posted August 2, 2019 Share #17 Posted August 2, 2019 Leicas are sturdy tools, and are solidly built. Don’t be afraid to handle it like one.
JimBo Posted August 2, 2019 Share #18 Posted August 2, 2019 A lille nose grease on the threads does the trick. Don’t laugh. It works.
Mute-on Posted August 3, 2019 Share #19 Posted August 3, 2019 Nose lube is the best. Really.
Gethyn Posted August 3, 2019 Share #20 Posted August 3, 2019 Success! My problem was removing the lens hood without damage as the Q2 arrived with the lens hood already installed. I used an Arstec jar opener (2.5 inch). With nose oil on the threads it now goes on and off easily. Nose oil has many uses including years ago polishing coronagraph lenses to reduce light scattering. Many thanks for all the input. Now to really start using my Q2.
