Can someone please tell me if this looks like a 50mm Summicron version 4?

I've made my mind up on a Summicron V4. I did actually find one in great condition for more money than the one below, but to be honest, the dealer seems really arrogant and not friendly enough for me to consider dealing with them if possible.

However I've just found this one from a dealer I've bought from in the past. Condition is worse but I'm not really bothered. Can one of you generous experts please confirm it's a IV? Sorry for the photos. They're all I have so hopefully enough for you to be able to tell.

Thanks

Definitely Summicron-M 2/50  .

V3 is different optical cell.

But may I ask why only V4 ?

Those 50mm Summicron (v4 or 5) share same optical formula, only mechanical differences, with or without slide-out hood, with or not a tab.

Look at the Wiki link:

:p you may be right it's a matter if taste.

Myself, long time ago, when I replaced one Summicron III with a IV, I regretted the "long throw, fine focussing" but "tabbed" was quicker to focus.

Then when I replaced my 50mm with Summilux-M (now Noctilux + Elmar-M/Elmarit-M), I appreciated the long throw focus again.

The best for that Summilux-M Asph. 50mm which has tab on ring.

Now I use them without thinking (tab/no tab), I adjust my practice.

Life changes  .

It's handy but I had a lens with it previously and just found it fiddly. It would extend when pulling the lens out of my bag etc. Simple is better :-)

Bought the lens pictured now and can't wait! Also picked up a wide angle, an SF40 flash and a new bag to carry all this stuff in. Now I just need to get out and find the time to take photos!!

The built-in hood is always handy and quick to deploy but next to useless functionally, so the version IV's clip-on hood is much preferable.

I've seen this comment about the built in hood on other lenses like the 75 apo. Is this a common view on all leica built in hoods?

Depends on lenses. As far as my copies are concerned:
- OK for 21/3.4 asph, 24/3.8, 50/1.4 asph, 50/2 v5, 75/2
- Less so about 28/2 v2, 35/1.4 FLE, 50/2 apo, 75/1.4, 90/2 v290/2 v3, 90/2 apo, 135/2.8, 135/3.4 apo.
(retractable hoods underlined)

I owned both a v IV and a v V for just long enough to realise how much I preferred the tab and general feel of the IV. As others have noted, the built-in hood of the V seemed like a good idea but did so little "shading" that it seemed pointless. I sold the V and have never regretted it.

50/2 v5 flares a bit less than 50/2 v4 though and its vestigial retractable hood remains handy. Now v4 has been my favorite 50/2 for 20+ years and without hood it is smaller than v5 (pic).

My v4 is a silver chrome and doesn't flare as much as people post about.  Lightroom tells me I have around 4,000 pictures over around 6+ years now.  Maybe less than 10 frames with flare and almost any lens would have flare in those circumstances.

The lack of flare I cannot explain -- maybe the inside was re-painted in matt black at some point before I bought it?  Otherwise I guess I got lucky.  I don't use the separate hood anymore.

Regarding built in hoods.  The only ones that seem to work are those on my 50mm silver chrome summilux pre-asph and my 1990s 90mm silver chrome pre-asph summicron.

Maybe there's something to the silver chrome body construction to make the hoods sticky?

The only 50mm I'd lust after is the 50mm elmar-m.  I'm hoping that I'd appreciate the even smaller size. Also I'm hoping it'd reduce what little focus shift the summircron has even further

Just traded mine for a new 50 Lux. I really enjoyed my 50 cron and now I'm looking forward to a new 50 with different characteristic.

[...] My question pls is why the ver V 50 cron is the only non ASPH cron on current range?

Because it is (much) less expensive than the 50/2 apo and remains one of the best 50s available despite its lack of aspherical element i suppose but there are perhaps other explanations.
