I worried that it would be too difficult to focus and that I was 'in over my head', or that it was a waste of money and lens, given my abilities. I'm about as amateur as they come. Couldn't be further from the truth! First, with an M240, I don't find it difficult to focus wide-open at all. I mean, you have to be careful and take your time, and I shoot continuous drive, adjusting my body by leaning in/out slightly. I shot the Man in the Hat while walking, at 1/180 shutter! The way I am justifying the high price is that it's basically 2 lenses in one. From f/1.4 on it draws like a Summilux by most reviewers' opinion. At f/0.95, it's in a magical league of one. The price difference between the Summilux and Noctliux is "only" $5000. So it's like buying a Summilux and a special 0.95 lens for $5K more. $5K for a 0.95 lens is not at all crazy, and well worth it. Yeah, you have the weight and size; but it's still lighter and smaller than carrying two lenses! Welcome, dear visitor! Roy Roy, Dont get anywhere near this lens if you are not going to buy it. Because if you touch it--I mean used to take some pics,you will be infected and there will be no cure by any doctors or at any hospital. But there is one cure: Buy it to clear that infection. (One could go with a Noctilux f/1.0 + Summliux, but the 1.0 costs more than $5K, and that has some rendering differences, as I'm sure everyone here knows already.) Focusing is very easy with the SL 601, as the viewfinder is outstanding. The F1 is reputedly not as sharp wide open as the 0.95. Rob, There is a Leica photographer in Coventry UK who uses Nocti F1, I think he is also known as Mr Leica (Google serach),he has some really stunning shots made with F1. It is a matter of taste. All of the new Karbe Leica lenses seem to have a much crisper rendering, but whether "sharper" is better is oftentimes subjective. I am/was looking for a lens that might be nice to take portraits and while I ended up finding a 'new' 75 mm sum micron asph apo (have not received it as yet to know if I will like it), many advised that for my intended main use that the pre asph were the better choices because of the softer treatment of the face. I would simply keep trying your F1 and if you choose to later go with the 0.95 there is still a nice market for those preferring yours. I have the older f/1.0 version (#11822) and am very happy with the way it draws, vignetting and all. As for the difficulty of focusing the Noctilux wide open, IMHO that worry has been overstated, usually by people who have never used a Noctilux. Focusing at f/1.0 has never been a problem in my experience, even with being a wearer of eye glasses. My 90mm Summicron ASPH/APO has given me far more fits with regard to nailing focus when shooting wide open than any other M lens has. Not that I would warn others away from the 90/2 APO, but it does take some getting used to and a bit of effort. Once you are on to this lens, the results are well worth the effort to learn how to shoot with it.
