Hello

 

Does anyone know image circle size of 280/4?

Specifically will is the image circle large enough to cover a 54x40 sensor?

 

In general is there a document/resource that lists Leica R lens image circles?

Quick check with my Apo-Telyt-R 4/280, the answer is no for 67mm of circle (circa 54x40).

It covers only around 60mm circle depending on focus distance and aperture.

How did you determine that image circle is 60mm? You said quick check, so I am curious if there is a technique.

I have an Apo-Elmarit-R 180/2.8 and it covers 54x40 so I was hoping 280/4 would cover as well.

The 280/4 works fine with the 1.4x APO on my S(006). That way, it focusses to infinity without adjustment. The 280-/4 on the S will focus to about 15-20m only w/o the 1.4 x APO.

If 280/4 covers 45x30 with a 1.4X extender, then it might cover 54x40 sensor.

If a 1.4X extender reduces the image circle by a factor of 1.4x then its absence would increase it by that factor.

Might that mean it would cover 63x42? i.e. [45x1.4 x 30x1.4]

I'm not sure about this. The -X (2 or 1.4) extender should take the central part of the original image and should enlarge it, regardless the size of the original image circle.

The 280/4 on its own covers the 45x30 sensor, the 1.4x is needed to focus to infinity. The 80/1.4 covers the S sensor but there is a large difference between 45x30 and 54x40 for a lens designed to cover 36x24 ;-)

Thanks for your replies. You guys are most probably correct.

Although, I have an apo-elmarit-r 180/2.8 and it does cover 54x40 sensor. Just barely but it does. That makes me wonder about 280/4. It would be quite remarkable if its image circle covered 54x40, since the original design was meant to cover only 36x24.

My quick technic is to have (some time ago) lenses that cover 24 x 65 for my Xpan with long focus or shift-WA lenses of other brands.

 

I use a large plastic hood and stick at one end "opaline paper" to simulate the film plane and I draw brackets of 24mm and 65mm on.

To be used with a lens, just apply the other end of the hood to the back of lens then "read" (with possibility of focus and aperture variable), on the opaline the circle of coverture.

Aim at a lamp, in focus or not, it's easy to see the circle.

 

When I used this with 4/280 yesterday, the circle has only about 60mm, that's all.

Far from +67mm required.

I wish I could use the 80mm Summilux on my S, I have the lens... It would be great for soft dreamy portraits! But there is no way to make it focus a bit further... I'd be okay with 5 meters being the limit for portraits with the 80mm... but it's only 1-2 meters I believe ;(

I got a chance to test Leica R 280/4 with a 54x40 digital back:

Image quality is fantastic but sadly the image circle is not large enough to cover 54x40 sensor. 
It would easily cover 44x33 and would be an incredible match for Fuji GFX or any other 44x33 sensor.

Its amazing how these Leica R lenses, originally designed for 36x24 cover 44x33 (some even cover 54x40) and hold their superb image quality into the corners.

Wouldn't it possible to modify the mount a bit? I will do some investigation on my R-glasses :)

 

If that would possible I would do it immediately! 

 

I'd be okay with someone 'destroying' my 80 1.4 if it would fit my S afterwards!
