Csacwp Posted March 6, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 6, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 100mm Summicron S is an incredible lens. I'm wondering what M-compatible lens is most similar to it? Maybe the Noctilux 0.95 or 1.0, or the 80mm Summilux R?

jip Posted March 6, 2017 Share #2 Posted March 6, 2017 Summilux-M 75mm or Summilux-R 80mm Depth of field wise and character wise, but and this is a BIG BUT, the 10mm Summicron S is much cleaner and more perfect with way less flaws. But I do feel it seems similar to my Summilux-R 80mm
R3D-D0T Posted March 6, 2017 Share #3 Posted March 6, 2017 I think there was a contax lens with an extremely shallow DOF?
Csacwp Posted March 7, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted March 7, 2017 Jip, your review of the 80 lux is what got me interested in that lens to begin with. How do you find it compares to the noctilux aside from the obvious differences in focal length?
albireo_double Posted March 7, 2017 Share #5 Posted March 7, 2017 (edited) I'd say the Summicron 75 Apo is the closest in rendering among M lenses. There is nothing "dreamy" about the S-100. But it is a bit gentler on the skin than the S-120. Edited March 7, 2017 by albireo_double
albertknappmd Posted March 7, 2017 Share #6 Posted March 7, 2017 The old 80mm R lens is the closest I know of. I had the former and loved it and now have the latter and love it.. Albert

ZHNL Posted March 8, 2017 Share #8 Posted March 8, 2017 The 100mm Summicron S is an incredible lens. I'm wondering what M-compatible lens is most similar to it? Maybe the Noctilux 0.95 or 1.0, or the 80mm Summilux R? It equivalents a 35mm format 80mm f1.6. So maybe 75lux or 90 cron are similar in DOF, but I agree it is more similar to 75Cron in term of look Since 75/80lux have lots of spherical aberration at wide aperture and 90cron is a little bit harsher in out of focus area.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted March 8, 2017 Share #9 Posted March 8, 2017 I have yet to see a lens like the 100 S. Similar DOF and angle of view. But they don't render like the S. Maybe an Otus...... Gordon

proenca Posted March 8, 2017 Share #11 Posted March 8, 2017 The only Contax lens that **sort of** comes close was the 85mm 1.4. However, the 100 it is really on a class of its own. Close lens? Hassy 100 2.2. Draws and renders more or less the same way but still, the 100S is vastly superior. 0.95 Noctilux, 75 Lux, etc are fine lense ( had them ) but they are NOWHERE near the 100S. superb lenses but the 100S is mind boggling.
xiaubauu2009 Posted March 8, 2017 Share #12 Posted March 8, 2017 Otus 85mm, optically superior, rendering is better too, but it's not an AF lens. Contax 645 80mm f/2... but it is not that good wide open. Nocti 0.95, is very special, but never really like it. Lux 50, love it, but it's not AF... So, yes, I think 100cron is very very very special.
Csacwp Posted March 9, 2017 Author Share #13 Posted March 9, 2017 Can't I buy an adaper and use the Otus 85mm 1.4 with my M246?
xiaubauu2009 Posted March 9, 2017 Share #14 Posted March 9, 2017 Can't I buy an adaper and use the Otus 85mm 1.4 with my M246? the handling will be nightmare. I used it on my A7R2, good as it is, it's very tiring carrying all day in HK...
jip Posted March 9, 2017 Share #15 Posted March 9, 2017 Jip, your review of the 80 lux is what got me interested in that lens to begin with. How do you find it compares to the noctilux aside from the obvious differences in focal length? I think it feels like the noctilux but since it's longer somehow it's easier to achieve focus than with the noctilux, also the image is less 'busy' and more serene... if that makes any sense? I'm comparing it to the f/1 noctilux here, the f/0,95 has this typical modern ASPH. look to it which is totally different, the depth of field might be the same though. I have the Otus 28 and I use it on the SL; a brilliant lens optically (one example). But not a lens that I would bring with me for street or hiking or travel. No way. But a beauty for specific events/occasions.
Csacwp Posted March 18, 2017 Author Share #17 Posted March 18, 2017 Thanks guys for the help- I ended up getting the 80 summilux and am really in love with it. It's serene and dreamy wide open and is soft for portraits, being gentle on the skin textures. From f/2.8 on it is quite sharp but still takes great portraits. At f/8 and f/11it is tack sharp and useful for landscapes. I've been using it on an M246 with great success and my female subjects are pleased with how the lens renders them. The only downside is that I can't use a thumbs up and the EVF2 together, so I'm finding the camera hard to hold steady with just the grip built into my half case. I think I'll have to get an M handgrip for it. The lens also isn't very contrasty so I'd highly recommend using filters with it. I'm going to bring a B&W orange filter with me everywhere I go with this lens.
