SonomaBear Posted March 6, 2017 Share #1 Posted March 6, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) While frustrated that Leica never updated the Q manual for release 2.0 of the firmware, it has forced all of us to dig deep and find the "hidden" features and new ways to accomplish old tasks. In teaching my grandson how to think before hitting the shutter button, it dawned on me that manuals are NOT user guides. Should I write and self-publish a Q User's Guide? What areas of the Q and its magnificence should I cover? Would Leica let me use their artwork for the camera components? What format book files do you prefer (PDF, iBooks, Kindle?) If you learned something, would you buy one? This might be fun. If it is popular, maybe I'll buy the M10 with 35 Summilux and write it off on taxes while writing the User's Guide! What format book files do you prefer (PDF, iBooks, Kindle?) If you learned something, would you buy one? - areas not covered by the manual as you said; areas most discussed here - I suspect Leica won't allow you anything - I prefer open formats that don't constrain me to buy hardware -so, pdf only for me - I'll pay if I learn something. But I hardly will learn something if it's already in the present manual.
SonomaBear Posted March 6, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted March 6, 2017 Thank you for your comments: and I absolutely agree. There would be no need IF a firmware 2.0 manual had been produced by Leica. - areas not covered by the manual as you said; areas most discussed here - I suspect Leica won't allow you anything - I prefer open formats that don't constrain me to buy hardware -so, pdf only for me - I'll pay if I learn something. Voxen Posted March 7, 2017 Share #4 Posted March 7, 2017 (edited) The Leica Q is a pretty simple camera so I'm not sure a complete guide is really awaited. If you do it for fun its cool but I really doubt you will sell a lot of copies, the return on time investment will be very low. Maybe a "how to" booklet that cover only complex settings would be more useful to some (EVF modes, AF modes, Wifi, etc). Just my 2 cents here Edited March 7, 2017 by Voxen

Perhaps a pinned thread on "Understanding Features" might help many folks and especially new Q owners. I often see new Q owners asking questions that were answered many months ago. The lack of an updated Rev 2.0 manual only adds to the challenges. Still, the Q is a pretty simple camera and most of it is easily mastered.
millsart Posted March 7, 2017 Share #6 Posted March 7, 2017 Q is a pretty simple camera. There are only what, 4 pages of menus. Compare that to the likes of Sony, Olympus etc where you've got like 40 pages of menu options. Its not like FW2.0 is that vastly different either... You can change the AF box size if you hold the delete button and turn the dial.... You can now assign the user profiles to the Fn button on the back in addition to the previous parameters, you can somewhat disable the video button... There you go....that is like half the content of the book LOL FW2.0 was a pretty minor update if I'm being honest. Fixed a few things, left a lot of things out still. I guess if you covered all the basics as well, like what ISO means in relation to SS and aperture, how the look of an image shot wide open is different than stopped down, what "wide open" actually means etc you could maybe make a short book, but probably most Leica users are starting off with a pretty good understanding of the basics of photography

lucerne Posted March 8, 2017 Share #8 Posted March 8, 2017 (edited) I come back to this topic, because I found a place with aparently external people posting 'how-to' documents with a Leica official agreement on them. An exemple : http://www.leica-akademie.com.au/downloads/photo-fundamentals.pdf HTH... Useful and concise, and does indicate Leica approval for this type of publication. . Not sure the Leica user population at large is going to find this. The forum membership isn't representative of the global Leica user community, some of whom never contact the forum.I think that the OP is suggesting a print upgrade of the manual following firmware version updates. Maybe? But I find that the upgraded features are easily worked out. Part of the fun of ownership. On the other hand however, my iPad and its applications is being updated daily . Sometimes 15 apps a day. I find it very irritating because most updates are bug fixes and improvements that I can never see after I've wasted time updating. Just my observation.
