21mm Summilux lens. Series VIII or Screw on Filters?

I recently purchased a 21mm Summilux lens. I have only just started to experiment working with it and am considering some ND Filters for it.

Regarding the Series VIII Filter system. Is there any advantage to the Series VIII system vs. an adapter that would allow 82mm Filters to be installed on the front of the hood?

I do Not currently own any Series VIII or 82 mm filters so I would have to purchase either system, although the purchase of the Adapter Ring would be a small extra expense vs. buying just series VIII filters,

I thought to ask if anyone has experience with either system on their 21mm Lux and might feel either has an advantage over the other or does losing the use of the Hood negate any advantage that the screw on filters might offer?

If you want to use graduated ND filters, I think the 82mm adapter is the only way to go.

yes, i have noticed that Series VIII filters seem to have less variety to choose from. I suppose that's a vote for the 82mm adapter option.

Series filters are limited or unavailable. They are easier to deal with in some instances and more difficult in others. I would be very concerned about scraping the front element interchanging filters often vs. the hassle of carrying a huge filter system off the front of a diminutive lens.

...good point, thanks. I am also aware that the lens curvature of the 21mm lux lens is slightly proud of the lens ring, so scratches do seem more possible with filter swaps and such.

I am starting to see with the limited availability of Series Viii filters and the potential to damage the glass that the screw on 82mm filter system may have the advantages.

I thought i'd post a Lens Filter update and pictures. I eventually decided to go with a screw-on 82mm front filter system and forgo the Series VIII filter system that this lens was designed to use.

I have only had a limited amount of testing time with it but it seems to be fine. The rangefinder is completely blocked by the 102mm lens hood, but with a 21mm lens, the Rangefinder has limited usefulness anyway and the EVF or Live View are needed.

I do feel that it physically makes the lens a bit obtrusive looking but I am getting used to that.

Thanks for posting the photos.  I dug out my 21 Sx system and it looks similar to yours.  When removing my Leica adapter from the lens I place a 67mm pinch lens cap on the rear portion to protect the threads/filters.

Once upon a time Contax made a small lens hood, W-1.  It is designed for wide angle lenses and it flares in a single jump to 96mm front diameter, only a centimeter in length it doesn't provide much flare resistance but it is small.  B+W also makes a hood that fits well.

Thanks for the comments and notes. I looked at that particular B & W Hood too when i was shopping to put this system together, and it also looks like a good choice, but I decided on the Sensei hood at the time but i feel both are adequate choices, this one seems to work well although i haven't very had much opportunity to fully demo it yet.

Only the compactness. The VIII filter fits inside the original hood provided with the 21mm Summilux, and also inside the ventilated shade by Overgaard (happens to be me) where the VIII filter is enclosed via a front ring you screw on to hold it in place.

Nice looking hood. Just to clarify. The series 8 filters float between the stock hood (or yours) and the lens?

Please, where can I buy VII and VIII filters for the Summilux 28 and 24?

dont forget this is the english part of the forum ;)

also, what is the filter thread of the 21lux? do i need a 50mm female to female adapter?

There is no native filter thread. The included hood accepts Series VIII Filters (which are threadless and are held in place by the hood), or you need to get the 82mm filter adapter, which screws onto the lens instead of the hood.

exactly, this is what i did with my 18mm, i used a female to female adapter, so i can use normal filters on the 18mm.

would love to do the same thing for the 21mm, but need to know the exact diameter

Measured @ 67mm, It's normal for Leica to use standard thread sizes.  I then attempted to place a 72-67mm step down ring on the lens hood threads to determine proper attachment.  Overcoming the slightest roughness to the threads the step ring attached without any issues.

Where do you source female to female adapter rings?

The hood is mounted on the lens, and then filter is dropped in front of the hood and kept in place with a ring with a screw.

Thinking about it, I guess one could screw a filter in the front. Just doesn't have a shade here to measure what filter size that would be. But that is how it worosk on the E43 (that takes E46 filters in the front), E39 that takes E46 filters, etc.

Will get it checked and get back.
