drdannn Posted February 23, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I played with the Q at the Leica Store in Los Angeles. None of us could figure out how to turn off the LCD screen and just use the EVF. There are many times when I would NOT want the lcd to be blasting bright in a dark room. So my question is : Can the screen be turned off? I have a d-lux 109 and the rear screen can be used in many modes including off completely. Advertisement Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 Hi drdannn, Take a look here Rear Screen Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mathorp Posted February 23, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2017 Go to Menu > Display Settings > EVF-LCD > then choose one of the 4 options: LCD / Auto / EVF Extended / EVF. It is easy to test them to see what they do, but the last one is the one you are looking for.
MT0227 Posted February 23, 2017 Share #3 Posted February 23, 2017 I'd suggest trying 'EVF Extended' - EVF is only activated when you hold the camera to your eye; LCD is only activated when you press 'menu' or 'play' buttons.
drdannn Posted February 23, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted February 23, 2017 Thanks I will go back to the store and try. Amazing that the Leica Rep. did not know of these options. I will post back once I give these menu options a try. Thanks!
dadohead Posted February 24, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 24, 2017 The thing I don't like about EVF Extended is there's no quick way to get the Live View, or at least there's no readily apparent way to get to Live View without going through the Menu. I’d love to be proved wrong. I'd say I shoot Live View about 40 or 50% of the time now, which is a first for me, so this is kind of a non-starter. To the OP: if you're like most of the posters here, you'll find at least one thing not to love about the Q. But you will learn to work around it and love the Q anyway. Still my favorite camera, but I must admit I'm hyperventilating over a Hasselblad X1Dc.
MT0227 Posted February 24, 2017 Share #6 Posted February 24, 2017 Under >Display> EVF-LCD -- The best option for your issue is "auto" - the Q will switch between EVF and LV when you hold the camera to your eye. You can set the LCD to shut after 30sec of non use. This is what you want...I think. There are times like in a nightclub, concert, and the like, when a fully lit LCD is distracting and annoying to other people.
v-lux Posted February 24, 2017 Share #8 Posted February 24, 2017 Hello, No. What I want is to be able to have the LCD dark and only use the EVF when I want that mode. There are times like in a nightclub, concert, and the like, when a fully lit LCD is distracting and annoying to other people. Unfortunately, this is not possible :-( I wanted the same. I tried 2 different user profile settings (one with LCD, one with EVF), but this is also not possible, I assume this is a bug, because the documentation says, that you could save every camera setting combination into a user profile. However, this is not true for the display/EVF settings :-/
marchyman Posted February 25, 2017 Share #9 Posted February 25, 2017 Interesting. I was not aware that Menu -> Display Settings -> EVF-LCD wasn't stored in a user profile. I got a hint that was the case when I selected a profile, changed the EVF-LCD mode, and noticed the camera still said I was on my selected profile. I hope that is a bug that will get fixed although it's not much of an issue for me as I keep my Q in EVF Extended mode 99% of the time.
MT0227 Posted February 27, 2017 Share #10 Posted February 27, 2017 EVF Extended is where I keep my Q. Given the EVF's resolution, I use it 99.9% of the time to shoot still photos....even wearing glasses. I can see using LV for video, and would simply setup a video profile to deal with it. I just don't use LV enough for this to be an issue for me. Leica should make use of the thumb button to toggle at some point.
