Un reliable Type240

I bought a new Leica M-P type 240 camera eighteen months ago.   Initially, I was very pleased with its performance.   However, it soon developed problems.   Even though I only shoot single shots, it has crashed on me three times, requiring me to remove and replace the battery in order to restore normal function.   On several more occasions the camera has stopped and displayed DNG requiring me to re-start it to clear.   Also, at other times, while working in good day light at normal settings it has stopped and run through a process related to Noise Reduction.

I have, on a number of occasions sought help from Leica Store Mayfair who, apart from advising me to check that I have the latest firmware installed and that I am using the correct memory card, have been of little help.

I need to resolve these problems and any help or advice would be most welcome.

If you are using the EVF, the latter might cause the problem - mine did so occasionally. I also had some (rare) lockups with Leica-R lenses attached by adaptor (original Leica adaptor), maybe because they can only be focused by EVF. I guess it is a contact problem. Currently everything is fine.

And have you checked the firmware version? Have you tried a different memory card?

Your camera is generally considered a very reliable model. Go back to your dealer and ask for your camera to be checked by their service technician. If it cannot be fixed, request it be exchanged.

Welcome to the forum.

....Even though I only shoot single shots, it has crashed on me three times, requiring me to remove and replace the battery in order to restore normal function. ....

This would be consistent with the SD card being defective or in need of formatting. Format the card in your computer using the program SDFormatter (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/).

...  On several more occasions the camera has stopped and displayed DNG requiring me to re-start it to clear.  ....

I'm afraid I do not understand this.

The camera runs the noise reduction only after shooting a frame with a longish exposure time. The most likely case seems to be that you had your camera set to automatic exposure and released the shutter with the lens cap on.

I had terrible issues with lockups, which I cured by regularly reformatting the card in the camera. In the year or so since I started doing that I've had one lockup.

The noise reduction thing sounds like you've pressed the shutter release with the lens cap on. We've all done it (or is it just me?)

That must be just you  :D

I think this sounds like 'new to digital Leica rangefinder syndrome', where the OP is running through the 'advanced' digital photography learning curve alongside a Leica rangefinder learning curve. It would be good to know if other than hearing the advice from Leica Mayfair anything was actually done about it, but responses above have been excellent information for the OP.

Did you try using SanDisk SDXC "Extreme Pro" 64 GB (Class 10, U1, 95 MB/s) card? I often read it is the most reliable with M240 and also helps the camera start up quicker.

I've been using it since I bought my M240 (original one) and never had problem.

The only time I got locked up was while using the EVF but it happened only once over  more than 5000 activations.

i had similar problems plus battery draining even when the camera was turned off.  Symptoms started within a few weeks of purchase.  I tried different batteries, disks, formatting disks, installing firmware, etc.  I sent it to Leica and they soldered a connection.  Works like a champ now.

  • 2 weeks later...

My Leica M 240 is " unreliable "for  4.5 years now.  Occasionally it doesn't make a picture, goes dead. I think it happens a few times every month. I got used of it. Now I rely on it's unreliability so much, that the camera surprises me sometimes and keeps working for months without a flaw. If it happens again, I just remove the battery and the camera works again. It feels almost the same like a MP camera of which I have to change the film roll every 38 shots.

You did resolve it. You removed the battery. :)

That is the only way I know how to resolve such cameras errors in my M9, Canon 5D, Hasselblad and, well, every other digital camera at some point.
