U.K. camera insurance for your Leica. Who do you recommend?

My M10 is on order and I'm thinking about insurance. I hope to travel throughout the U.K. with occasionally holidays abroad. Should I add my camera and lens (one lens to begin with) to my home insurance or would you recommend a specialist insurer, and who? I'm looking for 'all risks, new for old' cover.

Thanks for any help.

Mike.

I discussed this with Direct Line. Explained that at times I may have at least £10k of equipment in my messenger bag. Under my house and contents insurance they covered it all with a caveat of £250 excess for when I'm out and about.

Kind regards

Thanks for the reply, Christopher, I have thought about adding my camera gear to my home insurance and certainly that would cover me for theft from home. I'm considering specific camera insurance because it will detail everything I'm covered for (and not covered for). If my home insurance will give me written evidence that I am covered for 'all risks, new for old' then that should be o.k. If not, I may take out specific cover (first quote I have is for £188 for £10,000 cover for a year) for this year and then check out Direct Line next year. Thanks again,

Mike.

If you want 'specialist' camera insurance there are a variety of options. I've not used them but have been recommended http://www.aaduki.com - I use a commercial policy through a specialist broker: http://williamsoncarson.co.uk and there are others no doubt. Always read the small print as there are usually exclusions which may or may not be problematic - for example thefts from cars between certain hours, hotel rooms and so on. Really well worth checking as are excesses - do they apply to the whole or each named item. And lastly do not underinsure as you will only get a proportion of the pay out should the worst happen. I recommend a specific policy - ie named (and serial numbered) items only, so that other bits can be uninsured if not essential - but check with the insurer that this is acceptable.
