262 shutter

Today I had the opportunity to compare my old M typ 240 with an M typ 262 and an M10

I fell in love with the shutter of the 262. It's perfectly dumped. The camera has no vibrations at all, like a film M (even better)

The 262 is also lighter than both 240 and M10.

M10 is great, but it's shutter is not as perfect as that of the 262. I think this is related in some way with the live view.

I know LV can be of service to many photographers, but I never use it.

I realized I had to have the 262, so I bought it.

I would be very happy to buy an M10 as light as 550 grams with a shutter as perfect as that of the 262.

I suspect that I have to wait for the launch of the downgraded M10 in 2020 :-)

In the meanwhile I will enjoy my new 262

thanks Franco and what are the really differences betweenM262 and M10? I have the M262 and I am thinking if ti will be a good ideia to upgrade to the M10! My issues are not the shutter noise or size or weight, my issues are really technical: ISO is really different  and hight iso have much less noise than the M262? shutter speed is really better? shutter in live view is really different that viewfinder?  what more else is better? I confess I am note really convinced to move from M262 to M10 but.... Thansk

The 262 is fantastic IMHO. I am curious to try the M10. As an eyeglass wearer the greater eye relief may be the best feature of the M10. Some say it's a big difference and others have said they saw little difference.

Next would be higher ISO capabilities of the M10. The ISO dial on top holds little value for me. I shoot auto ISO in manual mode 90% of the time and in auto the remainder. With even better high ISO in the M10 letting the camera choose the ISO while you control the final ISO with EC makes even more sense.

I've never regretted not having live view on my 262.

The last unknown is the thinness. Will the additional 60 grams of the M10 over the 262 offset the feeling of a film M in your hand?

Well, the new sensor is really better ad higher ISO settings. I see a difference starting from 1600. The improvement is apparent from 3200.

ISO are not an issue for me. I cannot remember the last time I shot higher than 800.

I come from film time age.

When I compare the shutters of the three cameras, I'm not talking about noise. Who cares about noise? I'm not a piano player.

What change is the vibration of the camera.

On M240 the vibration of the second curtain is pretty strong and discomfortable.

On M10 the vibration is less string, but still apparent and boring.

On M262 non vibration at all.

Being a second curtain problem, this does not blur pictures, but is boring.

Ciao

Ciao Jim, I wear glasses too. The new finder is better, but not that much. You still have to "look around" into the eyepiece. I suspect that a longer eye relief would require an eyepiece as large as that of binoculars, which is not feasible on a rangefinder camera.

The "film feeling" is there until you shoot. After pressing the button, the shutter wake you up and kills your dreams. As I said, the trade off of live view is a complex / less dumped or something weird into the shutter mechanics.

In my opinion there is more film feeling into the 262 than into the M10.

Ciao

You're complaining about being bored for less than a fiftieth of a second? Good grief.

ETA: read a book while the second curtain closes.

Definitely not.

I'm bored of the vibration itself. This doesn't affect the pictures.

Second curtain is never a problem for pictures.

The problem is that it's boring to me.

i feel the vibration in my hands and I really dislike it. It's the same as driving a cheap car.

I haven't handled an M262 or M10, but coming from the M8 and M9 the M240's shutter was a world apart in terms of noise and aftershock.  Close enough to a film M that I wouldn't upgrade to either an M10 or M262 based on shutter feel or sound.  And although I would have bought an M262 if it had been the first model out, I have come to appreciate the optional EVF on the M240 for allowing me to no longer have to carry and switch optical finders when carrying multiple ultrawide focal lengths in my bag; for getting in close using an extension tube or diopter lens; and for the occasional use of my Visoflex and SLR lenses.
