FergusH Posted February 5, 2017 Share #1 Posted February 5, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I'm new here but I'm a long-time Leica user. I've been using a Sony RX1 for several years but yesterday picked up a used Leica Q. I've noticed two issues with it that I'm wondering if other people have seen before: 1. It seems to occasionally forget the time and date. I noticed this when I first inspected the camera with the seller. I turned it on and had to set the date and time. I didn't think much of that because I also noticed the version 2 firmware wasn't installed, so I assumed the camera had been sitting for a while. However, after using the camera yesterday afternoon and last night, I turned it on this morning and again had to enter the date and time. I didn't find anything relevant in the manual or in this forum. I'm thinking the onboard battery that saves settings might be dead. 2. The EVF view is odd. This one is harder to describe: the view through the electronic viewfinder is strange. Specifically, when I put my eye to the EVF, I see the image but I also see a frame or bezel around the image. The is the only Q I've used, so I'm not sure if it's normal. I *think* the view has changed since I got the camera - maybe something was loose and has now moved? - but I'm not 100% sure. I've attached an image that shows the issue. When I purchased the camera, I noticed a fairly large speck of something in the viewfinder but decided I would send the camera to Leica to get it removed. Perhaps it's related to the odd view issue. Any thoughts on either of these issues? (Other than "Send the camera to Leica"!) Thanks, Fergus Welcome, dear visitor! ropo54 Posted February 5, 2017 Share #2 Posted February 5, 2017 As to the first issue, I'm wondering whether you hit the menu item which perhaps reset the camera to original settings, or perhaps did a firmware update, either of which would reset the date. As to the latter, it looks like the sensor is being cropped. Not sure what is going on with that. Rob
Leica Guy Posted February 5, 2017 Share #3 Posted February 5, 2017 I would definitely check that you have the latest firmware update. If not, that's the first thing I'd do. If that doesn't make the camera operate normally and reliably, I'd send it to Leica immediately. It's a very nice camera and you'll enjoy it once all the issues you're experiencing are resolved. Good luck. Let us know how this turns out.
beez Posted February 5, 2017 Share #4 Posted February 5, 2017 As has been said, update to firmware 2.0. Then reset all setting to defaults, and see what the result is.
Stealth3kpl Posted February 6, 2017 Share #5 Posted February 6, 2017 (edited) Your No2 problem is simply that, in handling the camera you have pushed the button at the center of the selection dial. Push it again and it will scroll through movie mode and back to your full frame. This is also the cause of people finding that they have taken a movie clip despite turning off the movie button. wda Posted February 6, 2017 Share #6 Posted February 6, 2017 (edited) In addition, ensure that you have seated the EVF firmly in the shoe. If not you can see spurious image faults. Oh, and a firm welcome to the forum. Edited February 6, 2017 by wda
viramati Posted February 7, 2017 Share #7 Posted February 7, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) As to point 2 this sort of cinema type screen effect that you can sometimes see is normal for the Q (I'm now on my 4th camera and they were all like this)
wda Posted February 7, 2017 Share #8 Posted February 7, 2017 Someone has owned four Qs. I am still on my first one.
FergusH Posted February 7, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted February 7, 2017 Thanks to everyone who responded. I think I figured out the first issue: either installing firmware 2.0 required me to reset the date and time or perhaps I never did it correctly in the first place and the camera was prompting me to do it again. The interface was a little confusing to me at first, so it's possible I didn't set it correctly. Regardless, I haven't seen the problem reappear. I got a chance to look at another Q and it seems the EVF view is normal. (Thanks for your input on this, David.) I'm not sure why I thought the view had changed. Perhaps I should stop drinking... Sadly, I got to look at another Q at a local Leica dealer and they informed me that it might take *months* for me to get my camera returning if I decided to send it to Leica to get the dust removed. Oh no! Is that people's experience in getting a Q serviced? Thanks.

Oh no! Is that people's experience in getting a Q serviced? Thanks. Unless the dust is just too bad to live with or you're near the end of a warranty coverage period, I'd just live with it and enjoy some time using the camera. Mine has been super reliable and a joy to use every time I pick it up. It has limitations and the more I use it, I can more easily work around them while still loving the overall experience. Good luck. Let us know how you proceed.

FergusH Posted February 8, 2017 Author Share #12 Posted February 8, 2017 Who did you buy it used from? Maybe worth considering returning it if it was from a retailer? I bought it locally, off someone on Craigslist. The price was very good so I thought it was worth the risk. I'm not sure if it's the camera for the me: the manual controls are wonderful but I'm less impressed with the high ISO performance (and I would use this type of camera for a lot of low-light applications); I'll give it another week 'though and see how I like it
