Ironman Posted January 31, 2017 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All. I got my first Leica about a week ago before a vacation and I've just downloaded the photos from that holiday. Basically on about 80 percent of the photos appear to have hundreds of strange black or white dots on them. Its not dust. Any ideas?
Advertisement Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Hi Ironman, Take a look here Leica M9 photo quality issue. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 31, 2017 Share #2 Posted January 31, 2017 Yes, quite possibly advanced sensor corrosion. Leica offers a free sensor replacement service in that case. Contact Leica.
Ironman Posted January 31, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted January 31, 2017 Thanks for such a quick reply! Sensor corrosion doesn't sound good. I'll contact them tomorrow but i hope it is actually free. Any idea how long something like that would take to replace? I just googled 'sensor corrosion' and seems they also just replace it wit the same type of sensor which suggests it will just keep happening. One post suggests its 800-1500 euro. Thanks for your help.
BBHewee Posted January 31, 2017 Share #4 Posted January 31, 2017 Replacement is now definitely free, and the sensor has been changed to prevent the issue from happening again.

Thanks for your help. As others have said, it's free and the new sensor doesn't corrode. I was quoted about 3 weeks to replace. My local Leica store would send from Manchester UK and it would arrive in Germany the next day. They also have to rebuild the rangefinder etc so you know it will be correctly calibrated. I'm sending mine off at some point and I'm looking at it as a free service for my camera.
Ironman Posted January 31, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted January 31, 2017 Thanks for the reply and its a good positive way to look at it I guess. I've just sent a mail off to customer care along with a bunch of photo samples. Interestingly this statement on their website mentions the option to upgrade for a price depending on age of camera etc so i wonder if thats an option still. https://en.leica-camera.com/World-of-Leica/Leica-News/Global/2014/Important-Information-Concerning-the-CCD-Sensors
ramarren Posted January 31, 2017 Share #7 Posted January 31, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, when my M9 sensor was inspected and deemed to have the corrosion issue, Leica offered to replace it free of charge or buy it at current market value in exchange for an M or M-P typ 240. I chose the M-P typ 240. The whole process took about five weeks (Jan 2015 to Feb 2015), IIRC. I think after that they expanded the exchange offerings as new models entered their line-up, but I'm not sure.
