Filter size for 28mm F5.6 Summaron-M

Has anybody bought filters for the new version of the 28mm Summaron? It is described as having an E34mm thread which is not a common size nowadays, to say the least. Heliopan still make coloured filters (largely special order) for 34mm but I'm not 100% certain whether the thread pitch is the same as the one used on the 2016 version of this lens. Fotoimpex describe the Heliopan 34mm filter as having an 0.5 pitch.

Watsy, You need an SOOGZ (13154) adapter which will allow use of regular 39mm filters. It is a well made tension screw based adapter that doesn't look particularly bad.  There is a picture of it in the WIKI.  I have used it over the years many times with my vintage 28mm Summaron. Regards, Ron

Thanks Ron. Can you still get the hood on with the adapter in place? Is the SOOGZ substantively different to a step-up ring? I only really use a yellow filter so I might still order a 34mm Heliopan one - if it fits ok.

Watsy, I doubt it very much; the outside diameter of the adapter is 42.5mm exactly the same as a 50mm Summicron (the closest at hand lens available to me).  I would expect any other WA shade for a lens w/this outer diameter to fit. Having said that, probably the WA Leitz lens that least needs a lens shade is the 28mm Summaron. The Leica Polarizer (w/shade) will fit but interferes substantially, optically speaking. Regards, Ron

P.S.  Basically the adapter is the same as a step-up ring except it is a set screw/tension fit.

I do not have the new Summaron, but just the old version; and I have a 34 mm Heliopan-Filter.

There is no problem with the filter pitch at all, the only "issue" is that Heliopan only offers the filter in black.... The hood fits perfectly on the filter, so even this "cosmetical" problem disappears.

Though my experiece with the old version is no guarantee that the new version is the same, it would be more than strange if they altered anything for the filter pitch.

It would be strange but I seem to recall that Leica did something like that with the E43 filter thread on the 'retro' looking 50 Summilux lenses that they have released recently. I might be mistaken about this but it is this recollection that has prompted my question here. LCT usually knows about these things. :-)

Standard filter thread pitch is not 0.5mm anymore but 0.75mm now. Leica doesn't elaborate about this in its instructions booklet though (excerpt below). Better ask Leica to be sure as suggested.

Hi  - I bought a UV E34mm filter online (turned out to be crap quality) but as pointed out you can't use it with lens hood so I just left it off!

What make was this Ted? Crap quality aside, I presume it screwed on ok? I don't mind not using the hood because the lens is very deeply set into the lens body and, with the hood on, the lens loses much of its handy small size-ness. I just need a yellow filter for those times when I want a yellow filter.  :D

Thanks LCT. Yes, I checked the instruction booklet but am none the wiser. The current Heliopan 34mm is advertised by some sellers as compatible with A36 lenses which I know is an outer diameter for clamp-on accessories like the SOOGZ mentioned above but I understand many of those lenses also had an internal 34mm filter thread. That might explain why the Heliopan thread pitch is 0.5 and not 0.75. As I wrote earlier, Fotoimpex describe the Heliopan size as 34mm/0.5 but I can't find any official confirmation of that from a Heliopan source. I guess it would be useful if the new Summaron had the old thread pitch but it would be very true to form for Leica to have given it the 0.75 thread pitch without there being any filters or accessories available to screw into it.  :D  I have emailed Leica and will wait to hear what they say.

I haven't heard back from Leica but looking into this a little more it seems that 0.75 is the modern standard for filters 43mm and larger. Modern standard for 39mm and 40.5mm is still 0.5 apparently. What this means for 34mm isn't entirely clear but it seems like a good bet that Leica's E34 is 0.5 and should be the same as Heliopan's 34mm A36 size. I'll likely order one anyway. As the Heliopan filter is meant for A36 lenses I'm hopeful that I should be able to fit the Summaron hood onto the filter.

I've received a helpful reply from Leica.

"Thank you for your inquiry about the new 5,6/28 mm Summaron M lens.

The thread pitch of this lens is 0,5 mm and the filter which needs to be used is indeed a E34 filter. The Heliopan filter will fit if it is also a E34 size. The problem is that it might be sticking out and the use of the sun shade will not be possible at the same time. Since we do not have this kind of filter here in our workshop, we can´t really try it out in order to let you know for sure."

  • 4 weeks later...

I have recently received the Heliopan E34 yellow filter referenced above (SH-PMC multicoated version supplied by Lumiere in Germany) and I can confirm that it fits the filter thread of the new 28 Summaron perfectly.

I can also confirm Leica's suspicion that the lens hood cannot be fitted with the filter in place. I had wondered if the outer diameter of the filter ring would match the front of the lens (in which case the hood, being a compression fit, would likely be ok) but the filter is 1-2mm narrower in outside diameter and the hood fitting is therefore far too loose to stay attached. I guess a small rubber band around the filter ring may be the answer but, thinking about this, I'm not entirely sure it's such a good idea to fit the hood to the filter. Attached to the filter, the hood is effectively thrust forward and positioned about 6mm proud of it's normal position, and I wonder if that is likely to cause a vignetting problem?

Watsy, easy test to determine: shoot an ordinary sheet of paper up very close (focus doesn't matter) both with and without the hood on the rubber band; the answer will be clear and accurate. Regards, Ron

Yes, I'll probably run a few tests at some point.

Me too on buying the filter for using the lens on my M246. I have succumbed and ordered a Thorsten lens hood that accommodates the filter. I am due to get it soon will post a picture of it when on the camera....
