So how long before video capture functionality arrives?

I would expect an upgrade to the M Typ 240. I believe it would be harder to squeeze necessary features into the smaller M10 body, but I may be wrong.

IMO, Leica M is not best suited to video, and a zoom lens would be more versatile.

I definitely think we will see a choice of Leica M cameras. That's fantastic.

Having used dSLRs for tv work (in the early days) I totally agree. There are better platforms to properly shoot video on ergonomically. For casual video 'phones work fine too.

Not. Leica has clearly acknowledged the dichtomy between the fully functional M240 series and curtailed M10..Reason that, for the time being, both cameras remain in the program. I would not be surprised if we would see a gradual upgrade path for the M240 as well, to be able to offer two lines of M cameras to photographers with different wishes.

I think I may be on my own here but I love the video on the M240, but even better on the M246 where it produces really atmospheric B&W clips - this is one I shot of avant-garde singer Maggie Nichols (which will not be to everyone's taste - like Video in the M!).

Video and USB. Video is not an every part of life, sure there are better cameras for it, but the whole point of a Leica is that it is small and portable. You shouldn't need to take another system with you when you can have it in one and film/motion.video is a part of every day life now it probably has more relevance than still in some ways.

Tethered connection is a fundamental part of a lot of peoples work and without it, it is EOL. It makes no sense at all to drop it of a cliff like this.

IMO, Leica needs to reestablish another line with the same functionality, this is just crazy.

The Leica wording does suggest that the M240 was a different line to the M10, hence the M9-M10, personally I think the likelihood is the SL replaces the M240 and the M, stays true to it's routs

I think we will see over time the M240 presented by Leica as a different line, to the M9/10, seems that is happening already. Clever really, they will I am sure be careful not to disenfranchise the M240 owners who use video and I suspect explore how big this audience is (Suspect they know already) before engineering a video capable M. You'll note they say the SL was used for the M video's. I don't think we'll see a video M option any time soon

I'm torn over this one.  A bit of me is SO pleased that Leica have made the M10 as it meets my photographic needs almost completely.  But I also recognise that there's a significant community (of which I am member) who found the M-240's flexibility genuinely invaluable.  I'll say goodbye to my M-240's with some regret.  I also know that sod's law says that next month I'll get a commission which has a talking heads video element built into the brief!  I'll then have to pick up a used M240 as I won't want to hump the 5D3 system around Bihar or wherever.

A word of comfort - it's possible that the M-240 and M10 product lines will continue in production for the foreseeable future.  If there continues to be demand for both of them there's no reason why Leica shouldn't do an M-240 mk2 with improved sensor.  It would make commercial sense.

I'm afraid I disagree here.  Having tried the SL I would never see it as an alternative for use with M glass.  It's designed for an entirely different set of purposes - which don't include manual focus / manual aperture lenses IMHO.  I hated using the SL with M glass, and I would never have sunk so much capital into the Leica AF monster lenses.  For now Canon's do the job for me with fast affordable L series AF glass.  The M10 will be the camera of choice for documentary assignments and personal work.

My experience is quite different.  I find the M lenses I have work well with the SL, and the excellent EVF really makes them a joy to use.  The Noctilux and 21,28 & 75 Summiluxes and the 90 Summicron work very well with the SL to the point, there is no perceptible advantage using them on an M (save for size and having the OVF).

Never, ever. It would fracture the line. Video must come from a different model number - if I were the God of Leica :) I would guarantee the traditional Leica with two forms: one with video, one without. Neither with the M10 signature.

I would love to see M240 upgraded with similar sensor and better EVF in future. and I don't mind the bulk with benefits....one and half times (or more) battery life compared to M10 is no joke.

BTW: Highlight mine... Did you mean the state in India (Bihar)?

Won’t happen, ever.

Unless you think of the M (Typ 240) as the video version; that one already exists, and will continue to be available. Leica’s premier video camera is the SL of course.
