A covey of quail at my farm gate. Lucky to capture a flight image of these fast little birds.

Thank you everyone.

Dee, these birds are fast. This is the only flight image I've ever been able to take that's worth posting. I noticed these birds by my gate so I had time to set the shutter speed before moving closer. That and luck made the shot possible.

Bill, your shot is rather amazing for it's sharpness and detail. I have plenty of personal experience as to how fast quail are! We often come upon them in long summer grass as we walk through the paddocks.

They explode upwards with a startling whoosh and are off, flying low with a clatter of wings, only to land again perhaps 50 feet away and scuttle off through the grass, the parents trying to distract from the flightless chicks.

Our father was very fond of roast quail, he was a talented shot and frequently came home with a dozen or so tiny, beautiful, dead birds (I hated it) an early trauma that probably that contributed to my vegetarianism.

As I said earlier, lucky shot. I think spotting the birds on the ground and having time to set the shutter speed, etc. helped make the shot. I see quail on my property almost every day in the winter so I've taken many images of them. As for hunting and eating them, I've always thought there was not enough meat on them to justify killing them. It's more fun shooting them with a camera.
