Filming long shots with M240

My band is going to film one of our concerts soon and I'm planning on using my M240 too by placing it on a tripod. My plan is to start the cam before we go on and just leave it rolling. Between sets change the memorycard and repeat.

Few questions:

- Will I get any sensor overheating problems?

- I only have one battery, how long can I expect to film?

- How many minutes per GB can I expect to film? (in HD, 25fps).

- The other cameras filming the event would be Canon 5D/1D's, would the files produced be 'compatible' (file format, etc. )?

Any other tips to get some usable footage are welcome also :)

Thanks!

For legal reasons the recording time will be limited (to 20 minutes  IIRC) so you will have to restart the camera from time to time. Note that the built-in microphone is mono. Get the Olympus hotshoe one for better sound or use an external sound recording device.

In general I would never have any battery-dependent camera with just one battery. There are so many ways to drain it by mistake that carrying a spare is mandatory in my book.

Yes... in the sense that you will be able, using an appropriate video editing Software, to use the outputs of all the cameras to "Mount" a single video : of course, given that probably youwill get, for instance, some difference in colors balancing between the different cameras, you will have to manage this in post production (*)... all in all, let's say that is a job to be done by someone who at least has a certain confidence with the PP Software tools..

(*) Equivalent, someway, to make image stitching of 3 pictures from 3 different cameras...

I would not simply duplicate the shots taken by the Canons. Make use of strengths of the Leica as video camera, i.e. manoeuverability and fast, high quality lenses, so my advice would be  let somebody use it to get close and atmospheric shots to complement the rest of the footage.

The M240 is  not really a heavy-duty video camera.

Use an external sound recorder and take a feed from the sound desk.

Your Leica will have a different colour profile to the Canons but in post you could use the Leica footage in B&W.

Will the light levels be changing on the stage?

A tripod may get in the way while your band is on stage, I would suggest that a GoPro would be a better camera for stage use, it could be tucked out of the way on a Gorillapod. A Hero4 in 1080p (I think) will give you about 1 hour of recording.

Most important. Enjoy concert!

Thanks guys. To keep the costs / post-production time down we've decided yesterday to film 4 songs, so the 20 minute limit is not a problem. We have to check the facilities to record the sound form the board, else I'll use my Zoom recorder to record the sound.

I've looked up the best way to set the M240 (set the shutter to 1/45)

Jaap's suggestion to move around is great too, but I have my doubts if they are used to focusing an M camera. I do have the EVF so it might be possible.

People with PP experience will edit the the different sources.

Little OT: I've tested the external mic adapter at a small concert, looked and sounded good. I had to use image stabilization because for my taste I moved too much:

Thanks again!
