Nissin i40 for Leica

Hi guys,

 

 

many of us are in need of a small flash for our Leica. Best with decent output and fully tiltable.

 

 

You might know the Nissin i40, a very decent flash that is a very good fit for our cameras. No wait, that is not true: It does not fit!

 

 

The i40 has a push-lock (not a thumbwheel) that secures the flash in the hotshoe. But it does not fit, so it locks not into place. It fires but it can easily fall off, both at the M240 and the M9.

 

When you file down the front end of the hotshoe of the flash about 1-2 mm it fits perfectly and locks into place.

 

 

You might have already know that but I though I share it in case you did´t.

 

There is also the new i60, which has more power, but I did not try that one, yet.

Been thinking about a flash for those times you just need it or want a specific look. I like the i40's ability to dial down to 1/256.

 

It would be tempting to add this wireless flash trigger set to use the flash off camera without being tethered. That also opens the option to throw the flash in the corner of a room and bounce it off the wall or ceiling or even give it to an assistant (read willing stranger or wife...) for other positioning options.

I actually use a lot of off camera flash.

 

I combine the Nissin with the manual Yongnuo system. The OCF system here is awesome and very reliable.

 

For example, you can put a trigger on the Leica, the small Nissin on top (direct or bounced). Then you might have 3 big flashes in the corners and have a separate module in you pocket to turn the flashes on/off, zoom in/out and set the flash-output. Nothing left to desire.

 

Of course you can also just take the small triggers and use the Nissin with it off-camera.

before it was Metz and now it is Nissin

the Nissin i40 is exactly the same and cheaper but it will not work on the M , I don't know the difference exactly , maybe the adapter or only the firmware

 

I've sold my  too big SF-58 for the SF-40 , it works perfectly  and has a  perfect size but the build quality could be better

 

I find the price ok

yeah, on second though, the Leica one does TTL, right?

 

Is it reliable, consistent? Even with bounce?

Leica does not make flashes but licences them from Metz or Nissin and as part of the deal the manufacturer agrees not to sell a Leica M compatible version under their own name. This leaves Leica free to charge typical Leica prices. For example there is a Nissin i40 for Olympus/Panasonic/Leica but it only works withh the Pana Leicas which use the Olympus/Panasonic flash system but not with Leica M.X,T or SL as far as I know.

No, the flash is unable to handle the M-TTL system with preflash.

Leica flashes have always been based on other-brand models, be it by the SCA systems, or, as flashes became more complex by adapting Metz flashes. Now it seems they have switched to Nissin for the source of their flashes, not surprising given the recent upheaval at Metz.

All Leica flashes have been modified other-brand ones (Metz). Leica is not a flash manufacturer. Like they are not a lens filter manufacturer. All their filters are farmed out.

Nissin i40 works with Leica Dlux 109 in: Auto, TTL and manual mode. With Leica M240 works only in manual mode, so you have to use light meter or do it in trail error way.

I've been using Nissin i40 on my M262 for a year. I only use m mode & it works fine. The cost of Nissin i40 is ~60% of Leica SF40 in Hong Kong. I also plug the i40 to my Olympus OMD. It's convenient to keep one flash for 2 cameras.
