Macro with 135 Tele-Elmar

I used the following contraption to shoot macro picture of my Dad's first watch (all he could afford that time). It is not working and beyond repair according to my local repair shop. I was amazed what this contraption can do.

Nex-6, 135 Tele-Elmar head + macro extender + 16464K focusing helicoid + 14127 M2R adapter + X2APO extender + R2M adapter

I found that X2APO gives more magnification but becomes a little soft. Sharpening it in PP gives a marginal advantage in resolution over the same setup without X2APO extender. After this result, I will happily shoot macro without X2APO for most subjects at macro distance (note: at large distances, X2APO is exceptional).

Yes, I also liked the top photo (equipment photo). It was taken with M240+50 lux handheld. I love 50lux. :)

BTW, I tried to shoot the same using 90 macro-elmar-m with M2R(14127)+R2M acting as extender and got much better results. No wonder 90 macro-elmar M has a macro designation. :)

1:1 crop.

And this is a 1:1 crop where you can see a strand of hair on top for comparison.

I love the glow of the equipment photo.  Is there any chance you could post a photo of the 90 macro set-up?

Thank you.

This is 90 macro setup with the same 14127 M2R adapter + R2M adapter used as extension ring. This is just iPhone pic therefore it doesn't have the glow. :)

Hello Jmahto,

Nice photos all.

What aperture did you use with the 135mm, F4 Tele-Elmar?

Even though at normal focal distances from 1.5 meters to Infinity: Changes in aperture are more reflective of depth of field than they are of quality of images produced:

I think that, as with many macro lenses from that period, for photos in the 1 : 2 to 1 : 1 region: That the lens is optomized for use at F11.

Best Regards,

Michael

Thanks. I tried all apertures to see which is sharpest. In both 135 tele elmar and 90 macro elmar, f8 was the sharpest. In case of 90 macro elmar, the improvement from f4 to f8 was minimal for sharpness but DOF Improved. F11 and above softened a little. For more DOF, you will need to resort to focus stacking.
