M262 and 35 'lux compatibility

If you have a M262, you have also the instructions booklet... ;) which specifies :

"– Some versions of the Summilux-M 1.4/35mm (not aspherical,

manufactured from 1961-1995, Made in Canada) cannot be

fitted to the camera or will not focus to infinity. The Leica

Customer Care department can modify these lenses so that

they can be used on the camera."

Is the problem of the so called "baffle" around the back lens, which must be filed down to avoid issues. I think that, at the times in which the problem emerged, there were some posts in the LUF illustrating well thw problem,, and maybe also the Do-It-Yourself solution (I seem to remember it wasn't impossible, though delicate)

Thankyou Luigi, my bad I didn't read the instructions. :-( Will Leica know from the serial number if a lens requires modification?

Ps- I was in your beautiful country for a few days over the new year :-) Siena is a lovely city.

I'm not sure... if I remember correctly was a matter of manufacturing/assembly methodology... not specifically related to a certain "series/batch" (if you search with patience in the forum, maybe some other info can be found) . I have two, one V1 (1.765.xxx) and one V2 (2.290.xxx) : they look like in the attached picture, and both do work perfectly on my M 240.

Hi,

I remember the baffle of a 35 summilux v2 being a concern on my M8 and its narrower sensor "cage", I had the baffle removed and it was my main lens for some time.

It is not a concern on a full frame body.

I still have both summilux pre asph 35  v1 and v2 lenses with their baffles on  , no problem at all on my  M9. Just tried again right now !

You 'll find quite a few photos shared on the M threads of this forum taken with the 35 pre asph summilux lenses and full frame digi bodies.

Best, JM.

To be honest, I seem to remember that the issue (even in the Forum) emerged only on M8... due to the narrow "mouth" evidenced above by JM... but fact is that Leica continues to quote it in the manuals (it's also on my M manual, too, and even in the most recent like 262's). But having no suffered the problem (my Summilux worked fine on my M8 too) I can't say anythinig definitive about...

WE must never forget that OUR ONE is a GREAT FORUM.. B) ... and the advanced search has allowed me to find a pair of very old threads which go in depth about the "Summilux 35 issue"... in practice... all seems to be a matter of 1mm metal to be filed on certain items...

are any of these issues seen on m9?

My 35 lux v2 which did not fit my M8 and I had to unmount the baffle.

When I got a M9, I decided to have the baffle remounted and since then been using the same 35 lux pre asph v2 lens on a M9, MMv1 and a M240 .

Also tried a couple more 35 pre asph v1 and v2 lenses (from a 1960 v1 to a 1991 v2) also on the same former full frame M digital bodies with no glitch so I guess it is only an inner sensor cage size problem on the M8.

Just have a look at and compare the M8 and M9 sensor areas and you'll see the reason.

One can recognize on the above shot taken with a M9 the slight vignetting inherent to the 35 pre asph v2 summilux on a digital M body.

The DR 50 dual range helicoid problem also has been discussed on the forum.

Yes, also the "DR issue" can be fixed... but is someway a pity because (differently from the Lux35) you alter the originality of a lens that at its times was a sort of masterpiece both in mechanics and optics (but of course, one has any right to do anything he likes on his own items, expecially if is for using)

True.

I since have found a rear module sold on its own from another DR lens with the original helicoid , I intend to have my lens reverted back to its former state some day.
