overexposure in auto-mode

Hello,

I own my Leica-T for 2 years and I use the different scene-options quite often.

I use this options because working with the T is complicated for me. (I owned a M8 before, which worked much more intuitive, in my opinion)

Working in auto-mode (scn>'auto') usually gives good results. I'used it on the beach, on sunny days, in snow, for interior shooting,.

It works also fine when you pass the camera to someone else to take your picture.

Until for a few days..

I went for a trip to Paris. The weather was sunny.

I took the camera to shoot some quick pictures in the park and every pic resulted in overexposure.

I tried over, avoiding sunlight.. overexposure.

Street-shots in shaded light: overexposure.

Tried to reboot: same problem.

Also switching to manual and reducing the aperture, resulted in overexposure.

Only interior pictures look acceptable.

Perhaps a software update might help (I'm using 1.5 now).

Anyone else familiar with this issue?

Thanks for the reply Jaap.

I just checked the EV-compensation for all pictures that I took on that particular trip.

It is set to '0'.

I also checked the info from the pictures I took.

For one particular picture the camera has chosen: ISO 100, 0 ev, f/5 and shutter speed 1/500.

It's a picture from a statue, with the sun in my back. The result is.. nothing: almost everything is bright white :(

Maybe the statue was black and you metered on the it (was it one of the Maillol work in the Tuileries?)

Check also the type of metering you have in your setting!... "Center"? "Spot"? Or "Multi-Field"?

1/500 at f5 and iso 100 does not sound like the sort of settings that will give you bright white, so maybe it is a problem with the lens?

Check your aperture blades to see if they are stuck and if they do not close when you take a picture at f5, f8 etc. You can do that by looking at the lens from the front when you take the picture using an aperture that is quite small like f8/f11 etc. You should see the aperture closing and then opening again. Just an idea...

Thank you Louis.

It was in the Tuileries, yes :)

But the statue was in marble, and as I mentioned: all the pictures I shot outside resulted in overexposure.

I tried metering (focussing) on several subjects.. always the same result: overexposure.

I checked the metering: in auto mode it is set standard to: multi-field.

I've installed 1.6 just now.

Tomorrow I will try to shoot some pictures in daylight.

Check also your lens as  Kostas, Deadalus2000, is suggesting! He is often right! ;)

Thx for the help Kostas or Daedalus2000 ;)

I use the 23 mm summicron.

The apperture-blades seem to work well, they open and close on demand.

I hope this is only a software issue.

Although I'm worried it might be sensor.., strange I never remove the lens.

Well in a way this is good news! :)

Given that you said that you get the same effect in manual it feels to me that either the aperture does not close (which you said it does) or that the shutter stays open for longer than it should. So my suggestion would be to try the following:

1) Try another lens and see if you get the same effect

2) Use manual mode and try different speeds with the same aperture. Do you get different output or do you get the same output?

3) Try removing the battery for a few minutes and/or do a reboot or a reset if you do not mind. Does this clear the problem?

Also, maybe somehow share with us a pic with the full exit, if you can, so we can have a look, we may be able to spot something.

Best, Kostas

Yes John, I really appreciate peoples friendly help.

Anyway, I'm afraid my T-body will need a service :(

I removed and remounted the lens (I only own 1 lens) and noticed a problem with the spring mechanism.

The small red, spring loaded, button doesn't pop-up automatically; it blocks and only pops up by pushing the button beside several times.

(see picture)

When I mount the lens, I don't hear a click.

Now, when I switch on the camera, I cannot do anything.. (not taking pictures, no menu commands, I cannot turn it off, the only way to turn the camera off is by taking out its battery..)

Thank you all for your kind help, and off course: Happy New Year to all :)

p.s. I will reply as soon as I know more.

Hello,

My Leica dealer sent the body to Leica-Germany.

They come up with the following:

- Condition: traces of use, 'desply'(written this way..) scratched, impact!

(I can assure that the body is in mint state, including the display!)

This is what Leica proposes:

Adjust exposure metering, exchange shutter, adjustment of all parts, adjust lens locking system.

Necessary materials: shutter (€ 245,- excl. VAT) (the shutters was working well ;))

Total necessary hours: 2,2 at € 180,-/h (€ 396,- excl. VAT)... (it seems like the CEO is planning to do the job ;))

Total price incl. VAT: € 775,61

In other words according to Leica this body is total loss.

I told my dealer that Leica could keep the body!

My dealer has sent a reply to Leica.

I'm very disappointed in Leica's customer-service.

I totally agree with you; I have the same feeling about Leica Servicing!

But Leica in New Jersey, US, used to be my greatest experience of Customer Service. They were fast, helpful, carry and extremely professional. It was a real pleasure to deal with them. But now, everything has changed!..... I also had problem with extreme overexposed ( almost completely white) shots with wide open lenses. As I am still under warranty and eligible for free shipment to leica servicing, I had to wait a week and several complaints to finally receive my UPS label!...

Now that my camera is there, I have no idea or trust if a good work would be done on it!...

A very bad feeling!
