jaapv Posted January 2, 2017 Share #21 Posted January 2, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I guess he has been reading Erwin too. I think that lens tests, if one wants them to be useful must be done as rigorously as possible, and Erwin spends a lot of time in the Zeiss lens testing laboratory and in the Leica facility.
Advertisement Posted January 2, 2017 Posted January 2, 2017 Hi jaapv, Take a look here Elmar 24 f/3.8: Is it any good?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mmx_2 Posted January 2, 2017 Share #22 Posted January 2, 2017 (edited) Coming back to the lens, you cannot go wrong with it! It's just amazing and one of Leicas absolutely best lenses in terms of sharpness, CA and contrast. I bought mine for the M8 and just it extensively in this combination. Since I bought the M (240), I have used it less, but mostly because I now have 2 small children and a lot less time to take pictures other than indoor of the two and there my Lux 35 and 50 are better suited . Here is an macro example (using OUFRO): Unfortunately my sensor was very dirty at this time (was travelling so no way to clean it ) Edited January 2, 2017 by mmx_2
sml_photo Posted January 2, 2017 Share #23 Posted January 2, 2017 Is it any good? You betcha! Of course, it's performance is ultimately up to the photographer.
BjarniM Posted January 3, 2017 Author Share #24 Posted January 3, 2017 Thanks for your input. What would be a decent price for a second hand lens in pristine (10/10) condition?

wda Posted January 3, 2017 Share #26 Posted January 3, 2017 Regarding the original question, can anyone name a modern Leica lens which is NOT good?
BjarniM Posted January 4, 2017 Author Share #27 Posted January 4, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) 1200-1300eur Really? Isn't that too low for an absolutely mint condition?
erudolph Posted January 4, 2017 Share #28 Posted January 4, 2017 I bought one at KEH for 1200USD. It seems EXC +++ except for a tiny spot of missing paint on the hood. However, they were having some sort of flash sale at the time.
mmx_2 Posted January 4, 2017 Share #29 Posted January 4, 2017 I've seen it for sale here in Sweden for about 12000sek, so that was my indication. It's not very popular, most people prefer the Super-Elmar 21.
ocean2059 Posted January 5, 2017 Share #30 Posted January 5, 2017 I would highly recommend the Elmar-M 24/3.8 The current going price for used copies are around $1500-1700.
uhoh7 Posted January 5, 2017 Share #31 Posted January 5, 2017 I have 21 Sem and 28 cron. Always admired the 24 SEM, but don't really need it. I shoot M9 where 28 cron really sings. But many love the 24 SEM that's for sure.

jrp Posted January 7, 2017 Share #33 Posted January 7, 2017 The 24mm / 3.8 is as good as it gets, if you are looking for technical perfection. Check out the MTF graphs is you are in doubt.

spydrxx Posted January 8, 2017 Share #35 Posted January 8, 2017 Let's start with the premise that ALL Leica lenses are good, within their production timeframe. Just because the WWW doesn't carry a ton of accolades, has nothing to do with the lens. I suggest you start by reading knowledgable resources such as Puts for some details. I owned one for a couple of years sfter lusting for it, but found that for my style of work, it was too wide to justify keeping it. With some reluctance, because it was so good, I sold it when I needed some cash for a family emergency.
tobey bilek Posted January 9, 2017 Share #36 Posted January 9, 2017 If you like sharp right into the corners at 3.8, nice Leica colors, little to no distortion, you will like it. If you want a lens for near darkness, pick something else.
FeralCoton Posted January 9, 2017 Share #37 Posted January 9, 2017 I really like the 24 elmar. It is a. It of getting used having coverage beyond the viewfinder, but the lens is a bargain and very light. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
