I bought this old Leica case off craigslist for not much, hoping to kick start a Leica collection, and I'm having trouble figuring out its model. There are only a handful of forms and websites that have information on a cases like this, but I have yet to find information relevant to the configuration of my case. Its obviously in very rough shape, most likely missing many parts, only hindering my search for information on it. Anyways I was hoping you guys could help me out! I'm very new to this form, so forgive me for my being ill-informed on the topic.

Well... I'm not so expert on the many combination cases that were done... the noticeable feature of this one is that apparently it can accomodate TWO bodies : one with a long lens (135, by logic) and the other with a short one (Elmar 50 retracted or 28/35): in my books EKOOZ is described as made for one Leica, six lenses plus the usual mix of filters, cassettes etc... so your one seems not to fit the description; but I think that there was the way to "reconfigure" them, to a certain extent.

It has the two clasps which the EKOOZ had but, as Luigi says, this one has a configuration for two bodies. I have an early ETGAM case from 1931 which was the first of its kind produced by Leica. I have noted, however, that other ETGAM cases I have seen online have had different interior configurations. I have often thought that these hard cases were produced to order for customer requirements/outfits with different inside configurations. Any information about this would be gratefully received. The only other information I have about the EKOOZ is that it comes from the mid 1950s.

AFAIK the earliest type was the 1931 ETGAM

This was quite small and the ETTRE was later but still perhaps smaller than yours?

As stated above Google (other search engines are available) will show different combinations and you could perhaps order a case from parts to fit what you had.

Certainly the link above shows different combinations in that early case.

ETMAX was 30s ETGUS was from the 40s but were both one body sets AFAIK

EKOOZ was as described by my more knowledgeable poster above and contained: Leitz EKOOZ (1955), Leather combination case, brown with carrying strap, holding Leica camera, 6 lenses, 5 lens hoods, 8 filters, 5 cartridges, 1 universal viewfinder, one frame finder, two reflecting viewfinders, one self-timer 1 Near-optical focusing device (nooky or nooky-Hessum) 1 flash attachment, exposure meter cell with booster, 1 cable release.

EBKOO was described as a universal bag with several inserts variants:

1959 Catalogue USA: "Universal bag with insert III IIIg with 50mm and mounted Leicameter three objectives 28mm to 90mm, the 135mm Hektor, a reflector viewfinder, an Imarect universal viewfinder, a second camera or the flash system. " But I am struggling to find any links to this one which is very unfortunate as it does state a second body !! But I am worried by the bag description rather than case.

Some sources suggest cases were for Leica representatives to display outfits rather than use but those above were in various catalogues and generally available.

if a IIIg fits, being taller, that would date it a little as many have noted that model does not fit the early cases although this does look "early".

Personally this is the case I would want:

Every Leitz produced case I've seen has "E. Leitz Wetzlar" on the lower part of the inside of the lid.

Yours could have been made by a retailer?

John

My ETGAM from either 1930 or 1931 does not have this, but it does have Leitz and Leica embossed on the top of the lid. I am 100% certain that the case is genuine and original. It still has the key which has accompanied it for over 85 years. I believe that dealers may have had a role, in that different cases of the same description seem to have different interiors and such interiors seem to have been supplied according to the customer requirements as communicated by the dealer. To expand your point I believe that a lot of leather items, such as ever ready cases and outfit cases, may have been out-sourced by Leica. I have seen quite a bit of variation in the manufacture and styles of early leather items going all of the way back to the original ETRIN case for the 1 Model A, which could only be explained by such out-sourcing eg in the case of the ETRIN, ribbed leather, smooth leather, embossed, not embossed and different clasps. Any information on variations and case ordering procedures this would be gratefully received. I have a lot of catalogues from the 1930s and these do not give much clue as to how the case variations that were available could be obtained. There were other case manufacturers (for Leica) around in the late 1920s and early 1930s and some such as Dieleman are highly prized by Leica collectors and fetch quite a premium.

In the lower case, ETTRE?, what is the purpose of the leather and brass buckle? Is it a different fitting for the case straps?

Beautiful equipment, as always, your generosity in sharing is always appreciated.

Thank you Christopher, I always thank it was for the camera holding/carrying.

Looking better, even if the perspective isn't ideal, I think I was wrong about "body with 135"... an Hektor 135 probably would interfere with the receptacle at middle left... and the 2nd lens barrel retainer seems to be not aligned with the first one (while another retainer could had been removed... see the scratched leather next to the top)

  • 6 years later...

Case shown by member Broski is likely a thrashed version of the case shown below. A Pro photographer probably "re-organized" the original case to accommodate a second camera.
