Deciding on new D-Lux

Hello all,

Over years I have bought and used a M6TTL, then some Panasonic digital and have also a LX-7 today(D-Lux 6). I am thinking of moving up a slight bit to get a D-Lux. But now I have noticed the Panasonic GX8 which I guess I could use with my Leica M lenses, I have a 35mm, 50 and 90 mm Summicrons. But on the GX8 it will double the lenses, right? A 35mm will be a 70mm (almost telephoto?). I wish Leica was coming out with a newer D-Lux with more pixel sensor.

From a field of view perspective, the Four-Thirds sensor leads to the effect you describe. The focal length however stays - a 50mm for your Leica M will stay a 50mm, but will have the field of view of a 100mm, when used on a Four-Thirds Camera. The present D-LUX is certainly end of the production cycle now. While not really the same thing, a Pana GM-5K has 16 M Pix and is body-wise smaller than the DLUX, if I remember correctly. Add either a 17/45 lens combo or a 12-32 compact zoom, and you do have a good and compact set-up. Lenses can be used with the next body.

I have owned many cameras over the years and currently own four Leicas (both film and digital). My experience with the D-Lux 109 has not been good. The quality is questionable, the auto-focus intermittently fails, and overall the images are just not pin sharp. It would be nice if Leica would acknowledge that there have been problems but everything has been hush hush and sp you have to do some research on the web to see that others have had the same problem.

So the D-Lux is still made in Japan not China, correct? Wonder why the Leica dealers in the US have run out of the D-Lux here at Christmas? Seems like they would have built up stock. Wonder if there was a new version being cut in at factory?

Correct, the D-Lux is made in Japan.

So Photon42, if I put a 35mm film lens on a Panasonic GMC-GX85 I can still use for close up street scenes?

Yes, DAVIDMC100, you can. It will have the field of view of a 70mm lens for a "full-frame" body, such as, your Leica M6. It will be manual focus. You need an adapter. And there may even be adapters allowing you to focus closer than the minimal focus distance of your Leica lens (normally, this is 70 cm, but there are exceptions).

It that clear enough? I do (rarely) use Leica lenses on my m43 bodies. Mostly, because the genuine system lenses are very good and do auto focus.

Regards

Ivo
