Hi there,

 

since today I've used PocketWizard Triggers with my M9 and a bunch of Sb900.

Last week I've ordered the Yongnuo Yn685, a flash with a built in trigger, and the Yongnuo Yn622n Tx transmitter (for nikon).

I just wanted to try this new system and maybe replace the expensive PocketWizard.

 

On my Nikon camera it works perfectly, but on my M9 nothing happens.. Dose anyone of you know why? 

If I press the Test button il works but if I press the camera shutter in doesn't work..

I don't know about the Yongnuo, but if you put a Nikon iTTL flash (in TTL mode) into a body that is not iTTL compatible you get the same thing.  Perhaps it will work in manual mode.

 

Yes, of course, I'm using them on manual mode and with the PocketWizard everything is fine.

I've said this many many times on this forum - if you are using Yongnuo triggers on a Leica M camera then you MUST get the older RF602 NIKON trigger and receivers.

 

These work perfectly 1st time and every time and in fact are sadly more reliable than the expensive Pocket Wizards.

 

For off camera flash on a Leica M :-

 

IF YOU WANT TO USE THE YONGNUO SYSTEM THEN GET THE RF 602 NIKON  set and you will have totally reliable and inexpensive set up.

 

I have never had a misfire with the RF602's. Just remember that this will only give you basic manual off camera flash BUT this is what you ideally need - forget fancy TTL.    MANUAL is the way to go for off camera flash.

 

For anyone wanting to start out using off camera and creative flash then a must read is DAVID HOBBY'S  STROBIST site.

 

Follow this link to it and go through the exercises and take in the wonderful free advice!!

Start at Lighting 101 and work your way through.

True and with some modification...

If you have a Canon RF602, you can put tape over some of the Canon specific pins and it will work just as well. Also the RF601 is the same thing, but just oriented for studio lighting.

I have a YN560 III 2.4Ghz Wireless Flash Speedlite 

 

And Yongnuo YN RF-603 C3 Wireless Flash Trigger

 

Will these work on my m9?

Paul, do you use any diffusers or other light modifiers like umbrellas on your flash for outside photos?

 

They can be very effective but cumbersome, and inappropriate or even threatening for impromptu photos of "ordinary" people as opposed to models. How do you find people reacting to your using flash?

Thanks for such an informative and detailed reply Paul.

 

I used to try to avoid flash but I'm changing my attitude now and have been using it far more recently, and I'm enjoying the learning experience.

 

I've also concluded that Manual is by far the best way to use it because it is the only setting that seems totally predictable and reliable once you've worked out what you need and what works for you. Nice to have it confirmed by a more experienced practitioner!
