New Q User; there's no B on dial for shutter speed control, how do you take a long exposure without that B setting?

Relatively new using my Leica Q, basically only used once, but the first thing I noticed was on the shutter speed dial there is no B setting for long manual exposures, and my question to the readers, if known, or if any has used this, what or how do you take a long exposure without the B?.

When in shutter priority mode the long exposure time is a function of ISO setting. Go to the 1+ setting on the shutter speed dial then turn the thumb dial to whatever you want up to 120 secs for ISO 100 and correspondingly faster speeds for higher ISO settings. 60 secs for ISO 200, etc.

 

I discovered that in full manual mode when setting a specific aperture and shutter speed regardless of ISO, when you turn the dial it actually goes to a "T" which I assume is an indefinite timer. Same as "B" on other cameras.

yes, good method!

 

I do as follows: manual mode, ISO 100,  go to the menue and set the Thumb Wheel on auto, go to 1+ and select your speed with the wheel then.

Yup!... very simple and as I have had no time to play w/it and getting to know the way the systems work, well, had to rely on tips in this great forum.

The T mode doesn't really work as a true bulb mode. I believe it is limited to 120 seconds at ISO100. From what I understand, it is something to do with sensor overheating. Would be happy to be corrected though

OK, thanks for the hint. I just tried it. You set it to "T". If you press the shutter button once, the time starts running, although the display turns off right away. If you only tap the shutter, the display shows you the time running. If you really press the shutter button, it stops.

Now maybe I am missing something, but what would the benefit of manually starting and stopping the shutter in "T"-mode (and shaking the camera when pressing for "stop", even if on a tripod) instead of setting the exact time in seconds and then only press the button once (with the 2 sec selftimer), if the time is limited to 120s in both modes anyway?

This is quite a frustration when trying to shoot long exposures with a 10 stop ND filter. I wanted to shoot a 30s exposure at f16 but to get a proper exposure I'd have to boost the ISO.  Once you boost your ISO the exposure algorithm automatically reduces your shutter speed to something completely useless.  This also happens if you are set to T mode.  The Q won't let you over ride this setting.  I suppose to prevent the sensor from overheating.   

 

Does the forum have any advice for shooting long exposures on the Q with ND filters?

Why f 16? You are well into diffraction, it will be visible on your image.

I've tried this method..but after 120s..it stops and start to counting down for noise reduction..

Am I missing something?

No. I think 120s is the limit.
