UV/IR filter

If anything the B&W 486 filter is the better one if only by producing slightly less flare as it is multicoated. In my experience less prone to scratching as well. There is a minor difference in effect, but nothing that does not disappear with normal  processing / in-camera JPG conversion.

let me say it this way:

-from Wetzlar to Bad kreuznach it's less then 100km.

-there are only two brands of producers for this kind of filter in the whole world. guess for the chances there are for two plants on the whole world producing a product like this with very low potential on the market (how many M8 are there on the world and how many of them are still in use) only 100km apart? do you really think they would both put up a complete productionline for this product?

-guess again: what do you think where the Leicafilters might be produced?

Jackpot!

so: they might have different frames. but i would be very surprised to find the glasses to be different.

I never had a one to one comparision on rendering, but have a B+W MRC E43 for my Summilux 50, and indeed it looks more resistant to scratching ; the thickness of the mount is a minor issue : I cannot mount the cap with reversed hood... but as for many other... filter IS the cap...

All lenses with caps that fit over the lens in stead of inside the filter thread are affected. The cap will be too loose with the B+W on the front to be secure.

Most hoods that are not built in (with kind of a bajonet fitting) will not fit at all with the B+W mounted because the rim is just a fraction of a mm to thick.

Thanks, this is good to know.

I wonder if there are more than one version of the B+W filter then, as I use one on a Summicron-M 50 with no problems. My lens is the tabbed one with the latch-on hood. The hood is a total failure in any case. :)

Yes, it's the 12585. It's very difficult to put on and take off the lens. Sometimes it fastens nicely, other times it's quite a struggle. Of course, mine is second-hand and I don't know whether it has been like that from new.

(The above behavior is the same with or without a filter.)

Sounds like your hood has a problem. Been using my 12585 & 12585H since the eighties with no problem at all.

Are you sure yours is not the plastic made 12538 (pic)? It was in the box of my 50/2 v4 when i bought it new in 1981.

I use one on my Summicron 35 asph without problems. Both the original hood and the older type vented hood fit.

I have no problems with my slip-on caps (e.g.Elmar-M which has a ribbed rubber inside) either.

I think my 50cron hood will fit (just barely)

But any cap of v1, v2 , v3 50cron 36mm will fit so loosely that it will fall off too easily for comfort.

When I use the Leica 36mm filter, there is no issue because it is a fraction of a mm smaller in diameter and also a mm less high.

My 43mm B+W filter wil prevent my original Leica hood of my Summilux to fit properly. Actually the little tabs will grip on the gap between filter and lens but not where they should on the lens rim. Not sure if the Leica one would have been better because I do not have one of that size.

On my 28mm Emarit ASPH, the cap had the same issues with my B+W filter 36mm, Leica one was fine as if it was not there...

It is not a big deal for the caps, because you can always use a third party cap that will fit inside the filter thread....

You are referring to the current E39 clip-on plastic lens cap # 14038 (pic) i guess. Was not made for 50/2 v1, v2 or v3 as it did not exist yet if memory serves. I've been using A42 push-on caps then instead: 14003, 14031, 14122, 14268 and possibly others.
