Moradas are deeply rooted in colonial New Mexico, serving as holy places, chapels, for the lay brotherhood La Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno (Pious Fraternity of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene). They dot the countryside of northern New Mexico serving as gathering places for prayer, especially during lent and holy week and for organizing acts of charity in the local community throughout the year.
