Why don't Leica make spectacles?

After visiting the optician the other week for a new pair of specs and looking at all the pricey designer glasses around I began wondering why Leica have never developed a brand of spectacles - their logo would look quite good and I guess quite a few Leica fans would be tempted.

Carl Zeiss on the other hand appear to have dabbled in the spectacle market from time to time and as far as I am aware still make spectacle lenses.

I was just looking at a pair of Smart Glasses on Kickstater. Not much more than a regular pair but with a bone conductivity so you don't need headphones, wireless charging and my favourite thing... an app which lets you track where you have  left them!

mmm, I am at the stage were connected this and connected that is getting just too much. Not only because I think that having more "smart" things, makes the owners less "smart" (people donc't/can't read a map anymore), but also the adding up all the radio waves produced can't be good for our health.

As to the topic... yes, that could be fun  :)

Every child I have taught can read a map. Whether or not they choose to is another matter... I think the idea is that it would replace other bits of tech, so if you use a fitbit (I don't) it ca do that job and headphones. I wear my glasses most of the time so it wouldn't be an extra bit of kit. I don't like to think it makes me less smart, more that I am outsourcing some jobs :)

Great teaser!

Go on then, what will be the nature of this coming revolution?

Apparently a 'digital eye' is being developed to cure blindness, which will work rather like an EVF connected to your brain.

So I guess taking it further, instead of bothering with glasses or contact lenses you will have the option of having your eyes replaced with digital sensors?

  • 3 weeks later...

Why are spectacles simply single lens formulae? Why not a triplet to correct for 3rd and 4th order aberrations?

Or a vari-focal that depending on how close the subject is, changes focal length according to subject distance. Or do we call that autofocus?
