??? Summaron 2,8cm f 5,6 was never made available in BM... they just made an adapter with "28" engraved,,,

Luigi, as usual, you are totally correct. I don't know where this idea came from. I have never come across one in M mount. Ian, the one you saw must have had an adaptor fitted. Thanks also Ian for posting a link to my article, yet again. This is probably the fourth time that this has been linked off this forum. Hopefully, this piece will continue to go some way towards exploding some of the uniformed comments about the lens. It seems that in Leica-land everybody is an expert on various pieces of Leica equipment, except those who actually have it.

William,

The idea of an BM Summaron can from the wiki of this very forum to which I posted a link in my previous post. The text mentions:

  • Lens mount - Leica Screw-thread and M-bayonet

and

2499101 2499150 Summaron 2.8 cm 1:56 (M) 1971 50

I am no specialist, so it's very possible that I am mistaken. But in that case, the page should be corrected.

As for the dual mount version, I have no other information. It could be, and probably is, as you and Luigi say, the screw mount with an adaptor. I remember the text mentioning that the lens was a rare version. As I was wanting a 28mm my mouse had been hovering above the "buy" button for a while but as soon as the new version was officially announced somebody else bought the lens.  :)

Uhm... I never noticed this on the Wiki (my fault... :( ) ... in strict terms, it can be correct... but I don't think they were normal Summarons ... s/n 2499104, for instance, was surely mounted on a MDa 24x27 Postkamera for the Swedish Post ... a fixed focus Mount as in all the various Postkameras...  it was auctioned years ago at WestLicht, and they said it was part of a batch of 50 (or 60 ?) items of this kind.... probably I can find the auction item...

... found...

MDa 24x27mm 'Schwedische Post' rare body (made in a small batch of 60 cameras) with fix-focus Summaron 5.6/2.8cm no.2499104, mounted on Monoblitz II no.190 exposure housing, with instruction book and accessories in wooden transportation box"

WestLicht Auction May 2010... "60" looks someway odd in comparision with the declared batch of 50 lenses... but who knows...

Hello,

I have been using the old summaron 2.8 cm f5.6 on my M4, M5 , M8 and M240 with great success. It is a screw mount lens, on which I added a 90mm screw mount to M original Leica convertor. You need to find the adaptor that is not round, but has a recess on part of it, to allow for the distance setting lever to go form infinity to 1 meter. This adaptor is needed for all Leica M. The only problem with the M8 or M240 is that the diods used to read the code of the lens, do not see any lens as the codes should have been present on the mount at that place. But this still allows to take pictures with the old summaron 2.8 cm. This lens should be used at 5.6 or 8 for the maximum of contrast and sharpness. It also produces some nice vignetting that is a characteristic of this lens.

I have had the new model summaron-M 28mm 5.6. This one is coded and only offers the M mount. I found it very nice too, but to me, not better than the old one as my example of the old summaron 2.5 cm is as new!. Now we have two very excellent and compact 28mm lenses available to Leica users, that both are a joyce to use. Thank you Leica!

I know this is an older post but I have the newer 28/5.6 M version Summaron and was wondering how you get the distance setting lever past the preview lever to get to infinity. Of course it works a treat on my digital CL or an M but I want to use it on my M4-P? thanks in advance..

Hello Pono,

Trying to understand what you mean, I put my Summaron-M 5.6/28mm on one of my M4-P.

That M4-P is the only one M body that prevent to turn a bit with it's preview lever the 28mm focus lever.

Simple solution in my setup:

I mount the lens on M4-P with focus to infinity

then when turning the focus lever to about 1.5m stopped by the M4-P preview lever screw,

... push the lens lever from bottom, so not to push in the blocking device  😉

👇

For Summaron-M 5.6/28mm , the right thread is here, for the new M mount Summaron-M 28mm
