pedaes Posted November 7, 2016 Author Share #161 Posted November 7, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) One of the contributions from VB I remember was a discussion about what camera and lenses he should take on holliday (sound familiar?). After going through all his lens and their potential, his final conclusion was that he would take just one camera and lens - a fixed lens compact of the time (can't remember which).

Guest Posted November 7, 2016 Share #163 Posted November 7, 2016 (edited) Brian - Victor Blackman was a massive influence on me and as you say he was compulsive reading in AP. If you ever see it or can source a copy his book "My way with a camera" is a great read and he followed this up with another book called "Naff Off" which although not as good as the first is still well worth reading. Naff Off refers to what Princess Anne is alleged to have said to press photographers covering some horse trials that she was competing in. Do you remember the ship picture lens tests in AP when they would photograph the ship and then blow up the bow section to judge sharpness!! I remember reading both books. I also remember reading in the paper at the time ( probably the Mirror or the Express )about Princess Ann telling the photographers to Naff off. I personally always thought the word Naff had been changed to avoid embarrassment. We all new what she meant anyway.I remember the photos of the ship in the lens tests.I was very good because it gave a consistent base to work from. I remember VB sudgesting that always leave a few frames at the end of your film and take pictures of your local area.In years to come these would be the pictures which would give the most pleasure. I nearly bought a Minolta SRT 101 on his recommendation but finished up with a Pentax and then Canon and later Leica .Happy days. I am sure the AP war about 2 shilling when I bought it.I bought it alternatively with a mate who was on the same engineering apprentice intake as myself. The more things change, the more they stay the same Edited November 7, 2016 by Guest

My first camera was a Zeiss Werramat with f2.8 tesser lens. I was told that to use it until I had put 200 roles though it, before I was even to consider more lenses. Just bought: My way with a camera and Naff Off for £5.00 the 2 on EBay. Are you trying to do a Delia Smith and create a shortage. Both are used but look ok,described by the dealer as good and less than the price of a pint and a sandwich. mikemgb Posted November 7, 2016 Share #166 Posted November 7, 2016 I used to read AP back in the 80's, Victor Blackman's articles were always the first ones I read, I learned a lot from him and the magazine in general.

patashnik Posted November 8, 2016 Share #169 Posted November 8, 2016 Here in Norway, the currency started tanking around the beginning of 2013. Since then USD is up 50 percent, the Euro: 25 percent and the GBP (currently at + 20 percent, but at some point it was up 50 percent). It took a while before we started to see any real price increase, but beginning of 2015 it was happening all across the board. Leica is up 20-30 percent. Used prices haven't really changed all that much. I just stopped buying stuff for a year or so. But bargains are still to be found, I picked up a secondhand 35mm Summilux-M ASPH FLE for 1000 GBP from a large dealer here in Norway, so more than happy with that. Orient XI Posted November 8, 2016 Share #170 Posted November 8, 2016 You make it sound like I have the right to drive on the right in the UK because of equal treatment.Sorry I've come late to this thread. You do have the right to drive on the right in England — as I pointed out on Saturday to a group of German visitors I was escorting around London — at the entrance to the Ritz Hotel. Just when I had got them into the habit of looking right first before crossing the road!

andybarton Posted November 8, 2016 Share #172 Posted November 8, 2016 Yes, but what would happen if you did not cancel and didn't pay? Let me guess: You would get increasingly nasty letters and eventually be taken to court. Ian would have been caught by ANPR cameras by now (they are everywhere) and would have had his car seized by the police for being uninsured.
chris_tribble Posted November 16, 2016 Share #173 Posted November 16, 2016 Attempting to be on topic! I've just noticed that Leica Mayfair are now listing the SL body at £5870 (https://www.leica-storemayfair.co.uk/collections/sl-system). This is just over 10% more than the old list price (£5299) that Red Dot are still offering (http://www.reddotcameras.co.uk/339-sl-bodies). The M-240 list is now £5500 (https://www.leica-storemayfair.co.uk/collections/m-system) compared to the old price of £4779, again at Red Dot (http://www.reddotcameras.co.uk/223-m-bodies). I assume that these increases will hold for the foreseeable future and that the new M10 (or whatever) will come in over £5K in the UK. Does anyone have information on Leica prices in other markets?
jaapv Posted November 16, 2016 Share #174 Posted November 16, 2016 I found a very good special offer here: (5200 Euro) http://nl.mydigitaland.com/leica-sl-typ-601-10850.html?gclid=CL-Unq-LrdACFRYTGwodJvMI7A I have no idea about the (UK) shop. The M(240) was £5200 at launch and every dealer was charging full price. Can't remember what the exchange rate was then.
