Stealth versus Red Dot

This was mentioned a few times long ago.  I'm hoping for a newer, better answer.

How can I remove/replace/cover the Red Dot?

I was taking street images in San Francisco last week and a rather gnarly man started stalking me, always staring at the camera.  I use a wrist strap (peak designs) -- he would not be able to bump into me, cut a long strap, and take off but still he could rob me...

Choices:

I would gladly replace the Red for Black.  Can a dealer help?

Remove? Don't want an empty space.

Cover?  I must be able to clean it and not have any permanence.

When a Leica owner has his/her camera stolen they think it's because it was a Leica, in truth the thieves don't care, they probably lifted' a few Nikons, Canons & even a Pentax that day. They know all the makes and models, hiding the Red or Black dot does nothing to disguise the camera.. insure your equipment, go through the policy and ask the insurance company specific questions:- What If etc. etc.

Don't forget to include bags, filters, flashguns & other expensive accessories.. L

The only people who really notice red dots are people who own Leicas. Hiding a red dot or a camera name is just plain silly. If it really bothers you, I suggest that you buy another make of camera. The vast majority of my Leicas were made before Leica started using the red dot and still some people recognise my cameras as Leicas. Neither that nor the presence or absence of a red dot bother me. I agree with the advice about being careful and getting insurance etc, of course.

I live in the Bay Area and frequently walk around SF taking different shots.  I just put black gaffer tape over the red dot with each trip.  I don't go south of Mission, but I do admit there have been a couple of instances where I felt a little nervous.  I also wear a small non photo backpack.  Be safe.
