That's the main purpose of lens detection.

Though - the vignetting of the 28mm Summaron is an important part of its character. And why would one use a "substandard" outfashioned lens-design - if not for its character?

Answer, for convenience - as I mentioned elsewhere it fits nicely into a shirt pocket. While this may not justify the expense, I have had the lens since the 1970's. I bought it used from 42nd St. Camera on a rainy Saturday morning for $125. rlt

Sorry, It was a fading memory error. It was purchased, as described, at a Red Bank, NJ camera store.  Later that week I walked in to 42nd St Camera with the lens on a M-3 and the store owner offered me more than I had paid for it. One of the few cases where I purchased a Leica lens at an extremely good price. Regards, Ron

The new Summaron 28 just arrived today. Here's one of first pictures I shot with it — I processed it in B&W because I read somewhere that it was particularly good for B&W, although I don't recall whether that referred to film of digital. Ian Watt noted that he suspected the lens was particularly good for film, but said that he hadn't shot it with digital. I like the feeling of the picture below, but must note that I processed it with Silver Efex, and liked this version better than the B&W I made in Lightroom in terms of the contrast and the feeling of the light. So, not sure whether it's the lens of Silver Efex: I would say both.

Here is another photo with the new Summaron and the M10, both is color and B&W, the latter processed with Silver Efex. Shot at ISO 100, f/8 and 1/125 sec.
