Hey Leica, Just A Thought...

I've been using the Q for nearly a year and love much about it. But there are times I wish I had more versatility with the focal length. If Leica were to introduce a Q with a fixed 24-90 f2.8-4, I'd buy it without hesitation. I think a lot of others also would. In fact, my belief is that Leica would have a difficult time supplying the demand.

The lens would inevitably be huge and I suspect it would cannibalise sales of the SL+24-90, even whilst lacking the latter's greater versatility.

I'd be happy to accept a large lens, though clearly not as large as the SL 24-90. Even something with less range, say around 28-70 would be very worthy of consideration. I don't think interchangeable lenses is the way to go because that would defeat the purpose, which is to be able to go out with one versatile camera. I looked at the SL with 24-90 a few days ago and immediately dismissed it. If I was still shooting professionally, I'd definitely have it. But since I am retired and shooting just for my own pleasure, I cannot justify the bulk and weight of the SL system. The Q with a zoom lens would completely satisfy me.

It doesn't really work to make it an ILC though. You lose the leaf shutter and the Q is so compact because the lens extends into the body which it couldn't do on an ILC. See the size difference between the Sony RX1R and the A7R series for how much bigger the ILC system needs to be.

The QV(vario)   28-70 lens would be the next Q generation I hope.

This version of the Q will not  canabalise the Leica SL  24-90 Lens...

think about the price of the combinaison of the SL + 24-90 :  11'500.- US $

The future QV(ario)  price:  about 6'000 US $   .... maybe!

The delta:  travel to the best Country you prefer :)

I can see a Q with more MP (similar to the (RX1 II) to allow for more cropping. This assumes this does not come at an increase in noise or degradation of image quality. Even at 28mm I would not want the full res of the jpg or raw with a higher bit sensor so they would need to give me a work around for that issue to. In my mind 24meg is the limit I want to deal with and given a choice I would rather 16meg for almost all my images. More optical reach without giving me a wide option such as 28mm is a no go for me. Also a significant change in lens size or loss of wide aperture are also non starters. I honestly don't even want any optical zoom. That is not a Q.  In the end my conclusion is that the Q got everything right for me. If I loose having the flexibility of more reach so be it. I like wide for almost everything I do and cropping (in camera or out) is a good compromise. This come from a former Rx1 user that upgraded to a Q.

Many many year ago I can remember buying a new Nikon Nikkomat EL which quickly became the best camera I had ever owned. Now after using a wide range of cameras (including the M 240) I can say I have found my Nikkomat in the form of the Leica Q. I traded in the M 240 and walked from the shop with a brand new Q and it is the best thing I have done photographically for a long time. Re the 28mm issue, I too would be at the front of the queue for a 35-75 fixed lens so please Leica, think again because it looks like there is a lot of interest out there.

Having gone from Nikon to Fuji to Leica, I also traded in my used M(240) for a new Q, & also could not be happier.  My impetus originally was some aging eyesight issues & the RF focusing problems it created. However I have learned to enjoy using the 28mm, while occasionally missing the 50mm & 90mm lenses I had with the M.  So a Vario version sounds appealing if it could be managed without destroying the form & function of the Q.  My fixed lens Fuji X100S also offered some teleconverter options for it that might also be an option for Leica to consider.  The way the hood is designed to screw on the Summulux 28mm seems ideally suited to be able to adapt teleconverter lens options as well.  The firmware could also likely be enhanced to provide the same great framelines needed for any added focal lengths.  I would certainly prefer this to having to purchase another Q body for another focal length or for a Vario.
