SonomaBear Posted October 11, 2016 Share #1 Posted October 11, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Regaining my 60 year love for B&W images after all these years shooting chromes then digital, the Q is my instrument of choice. Canon EOS can do everything I need except these brilliant 28mm perspective images. I often compose B&W differently. Now I want to concentrate on Monochrome. I love that the EVF and LCD display Monochrome when I change the JPEG "saturation" to Monochrome. Lightroom shows monochrome before the import because it displays the mini-jpeg layer. Once imported I see the complete DNG in color as expected. Now the question after the long-winded preamble: Does anyone have a good post-processing Develop Module Preset for getting my image to resemble the M Monochrome look and feel? Advertisement Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Hi SonomaBear, Take a look here Q for Monochrome Images in Lightroom Post Processing?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Belle123 Posted October 11, 2016 Share #2 Posted October 11, 2016 I have both the Q and M246. Never did a side by side comparison or tried to make a Q image resemble the monochrome. Not sure is possible to really mimic the 246 or MM1, beyond what the Q can capture in color converted to b/w. But have to say occasionally have had some files out of the Q come darn close. Very good for b/w. But the monochrome picks up more information which makes it different.
Albert2 Posted October 11, 2016 Share #3 Posted October 11, 2016 Silver Efex Pro 2 works for me but as the other man said the 246 or film: choice is yours. Good luck.
dadohead Posted October 12, 2016 Share #4 Posted October 12, 2016 Ditto for Silver Efex Pro. If you can't do it with that, it can't be done. Lots of presets and lots of film simulations. And it's free.
riswanc Posted October 12, 2016 Share #5 Posted October 12, 2016 With the monochrome i dont do much post processing as it will never be as good as the original ones Just play with exposure, highlights shadows and may be curve Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

SonomaBear Posted October 12, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted October 12, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I got all excited when I read about Silver Efex Pro, downloaded it, the installer crashed. Went to the Nik Collection Help and found that they are not compatible with the latest MacOS. If you installed before updating your Mac, it might work. Their installer will not! SonomaBear Posted October 14, 2016 Author Share #10 Posted October 14, 2016 What other monochrome presets are recommended? Silver Efex Pro is not supported by Google. Tried installing again per tip from NIK Forum about a work around. Did not work. It is too bad that Google does not support NIK very well and does not communicate. Google could learn a lot from AppleCare... I uninstalled and must look elsewhere.
microview Posted October 16, 2016 Share #11 Posted October 16, 2016 (edited) I bought Silver Efex Pro in 2009 and use it with PS (CS3). Just downloaded the complete package at Google Nik Collection (618MB) and I see it only works with LR. Will try it and report back. My Mac is OS 10.8.5, btw. Later OK downloaded it and it should work with LR3 LR5 LR6CC, but tried developing a file in LR5 after Nik installation and found absolutely nothing new on offer – none of the included Silver Efex section. So I uninstalled and luckily this left the CS3 plugin untouched. Puzzled! Perhaps the moderators will shift this topic to another Forum section? Later still! Nik Collection Help section is, I discover, extremely informative. PS users need CS4 or later for the Collection, but at least I learned how to involve older Silver Efex as part of an LR development: it creates a new DNG but leaves the original intact if you don't like the effect chosen. SonomaBear Posted October 25, 2016 Author Share #13 Posted October 25, 2016 Nik now installs properly on Mac OS 10.12.1 (today's release) and works beautifully from LR CC. I did have a problem right after the install but this fixed it: "Occasionally, after running a Nik Collection installer, the software may not be installed correctly in Adobe Lightroom. This seems to occur because the “Store Presets with Catalog” option in Lightroom's Preferences is checked."

cgiammona Posted October 29, 2016 Share #17 Posted October 29, 2016 I love Macphun's Tonality CK for B&W as a plugin to Lightroom.
Iduna Posted October 31, 2016 Share #18 Posted October 31, 2016 Silver Efex Pro is my ultimate choice also. I use my own adaption. The collection of presets is only giving a hint, so I create my own presets. If you imagine a certain look while taking the picture you can find a good solution in Silver Efex. I never use the monochrome function in the camera but work from the colour RAW. Before that I worked with Topaz.
Tim picture taker Posted November 1, 2016 Share #19 Posted November 1, 2016 I'd be interested to hear views on converting the RAW image to B&W in Lightroom.
SonomaBear Posted November 2, 2016 Author Share #20 Posted November 2, 2016 I'd be interested to hear views on converting the RAW image to B&W in Lightroom. It's the only way to go. Easy to do. If you don't get exactly what you want, "Edit In..." Silver Efex
