Why won't this fringing go away?

I have this photograph of a chimney taken at night, illuminated by a spotlight shining from the floor. At the ridges where the chimney sections are welded there are red and green fringes. The chimney is white.

When I try to defringe in Lightroom nothing happens. When I try to pick a fringe colour I get the message:

Cannot set the purple or green fringe color. Please sample a representative fringe color again.

Thanks for an explanation :)

There are several tools to help.  First, make sure you've checked the box to eliminate chromatic aberration.

Next, be sure to move the de-fringe tool around until you find a better green/purple match.  If that fails, you can use the sliders separately.  Here is an older LR video tutorial that might help to explain...

Also, you have the local adjustment brush, which can be used along with the de-fringe slider in the drop-down.
