street photography using 12 second timer

I was walking down the street today with the X Vario.

I noticed the X Vario hangs at my hip with the LCD flush against my body and the lens pointing horizontally..so you could actually take a shot with it....hmmm

Then I had this crazy idea that I could use the 12 second self-timer to randomly trigger the camera....

So I did these things:

o Set the ISO to 400 to keep the shutter speed high

o Manually set focus around eight feet or so

o Set aperture to f/5.6

I walked down the street and I wasn't expecting very much so I didn't check it at the time.

But I just now checked it, and it's an interesting shot. It's not very sharp, but it is a usable shot.

I did a little postprocessing in LR to bring down highlights and bring up shadows.

No cropping - this is the full photo as it was randomly shot.

I should do this more often.

Toshi

Good idea, and totally discret. Also mabybe a good thing for beginners in street photography who are too shy walking around with cam kust next to eye. But you have to check in this 12 second time period and sure you cannot see into future. Street photo is IMHO something different: look what happens and take the just happen moment. Your Idea is a kind of "by accident" photography.

My idea: serial shots by walking around, e.g. every 10s a.picture.

That would be interesting watching the photo series over time.

I dont know Bodycam ( do Policemen wear tjese kind of camera) but there are several kind of "spy videocam" on the market e.g. in pen or in a light. These have already FullHD. Maybe one can get nice single Photos out from the film.

Great idea. I do something similar with the X-Vario except I just discretely push the button. Few people notice (I also sometimes use my EVF to look "down" into the camera, bending over it. So far no one has noticed that I was photographing them. I think they assume that I'm adjusting the equipment.

Ralph Gibson used to take selfies with his M4 like that. He'd trip the camera's self-timer and toss it in the air. Requires sure hands.

I always want to try it with my Leica S and 24mm lens (sure to be something on the frame...) but I'm afraid that if I don't catch it I will be splashed by the weight of the camera... haha

But sure the S is not so discret then X (and makes more noise ;))

I made experience: as more "discret" I want to be, more people get notice of me and the cam.

Just put the cam to the eye and take the moment is just 2 seconds and nobody will see or recognize it.

And even if recognised, no problem: the moment is taken ^^
