Erwin Puts' latest book is now available for order.  http://www.imx.nl/photo/styled-49/

This is the third of a series of four books about Leica cameras and lenses and history.  Erwin is one of the foremost Leica experts and his books are printed in relatively small runs and then they are gone.  They sell out quickly.

Recommended.

I find his style of writing hard going and some of the points he makes are inaccurate at best and often just silly!

Each to their own of course.

Sorry to be a dissenting voice, but I find most of this stuff being a celebration of tools rather than photography...

Nobody actually asked either of you for your critique of a book you haven't even read yet.  Where is your book... I thought so.

And nobody asked you to promote Puts book!

I don't need to read it anyway, as I've said I don't like his style of writing.

I don't know Puts and was not promoting him.

It was a thread I started to help other folks that enjoy his books and let them know that he has a new book out.

What is wrong with you?  As Ive asked you before, please keep your hate off my threads.  If, you don't have something constructive to say, I think we can all agree that calling him silly is not constructive, then keep it to yourself.

Rick I'm not sure that you really understand how these forums work.

James:

I sooooo know how these forums work.  Some folks try and help people and be constructive in their posts and try to inform folks of interesting news.  And then there are others who troll and traffic in hate and snide remarks.

I have his original Compendium, which he inscribed for me when I picked it up in person from him in his hometown.  Very nice gentleman.  I must be in a haze because I didn't know he published any others.

Same here: I have the latest version of the Compendium and wasn't aware of any other books... Now I have put in a deposit for this one too, thanks to Rick's informative post. I confess I'm not a big fan of Puts' style of writing either, but he provides interesting information in a single place.

Hello All,

There is something I feel that I must add here. I have read much of what Erwin Puts has written about lenses, and it is obvious to me that he is very, very, knowledgable, and also that English is not his native language, leading to a slightly unique method of expressing himself.

I am a professor of cinematography, and an author myself of 4 books on cinematography, and I have found his books essential in my research work. There are very few people who are not lens designers, who can speak intelligently about lens design, and Irwin is one of the very few. I have never met him, but I am indebted to him for his work.

I have his first two books in the 4 part saga, Leica Chronicle and Leica Practicum.

I found them to very informative and useful reading. While the first was very much a history of Leica and a compendium of products with useful product information, the second provided a useful understanding of the concepts and principles of photography.

I think it was a very good job for self-published books.

Can't wait to check out the next one, which I have reserved.

At least his English is far better than the (supposedly professional) translations we see in LFI. As for proof reading, yes, getting rid of  typos and twisted grammar is not a job an author should tackle himself. We all tend to be blind to our own mistakes.
