So apparently there is both a brass version and nickel of the leica 50 3.5 elmar. Also around 1954 there was a change between E39 and a36 so 36 and 39 mm.

Can someone explain the difference between the quality of the brass and nickel versions? Is one better than the other? im not a chemist or metalurgist...

What do the two "sizes" refer to? And also, were all the same (old ) accesories made available for each size?

Thanks for your time guys!

Earlier lenses were nickel plated, then chrome plating became standard. They're all brass.

The numbers refer to filter size. A36 are clamp on filters. E39 is 39mm threaded filter size. The later f3.5 E39 lens was only made in M mount, but you can buy the 50 f2.8 version in LTM mount.

Thanks a lot earleygallery.

Simple enough. So for an iiig it's just the a36 and either nickel or chrome ( the latter just coming down to a matter of looks)

Have I got it right?

Yes if you consider only the classic Elmar f 3,5... as James said, the Elmar f 2,8 (E39 filter) does exist in screw Mount... and, by the way, is one of the lenses that better matches a IIIG in "historical" terms : the Elmar f 2,8 was introduced the same year of the IIIG, and the IIIG itself was listed as body only, body with Elmar f 2,8, body with Summicron f2... not with the Elmar f 3,5 which , in the screw mount version, was in practice no more built in the years of IIIG production.

About accessories... the f 2,8 cannot be used with the classic near focusing accessory NOOKY... which anyway doesn't fit the IIIG , but only the previous bodies : IIIG uses a different accessory for the same function (ADVOO) which, not by chance, works with Elmar 2,8 and not 3,5 (it includes an E39 near focus dipotre lens)

IMHO, the perfect match for a Leica IIIg is a collapsible Summicron 5cm lens, while a IIIf blends nicely with the Elmar 3,5. Don't know why, but try out yourself and you will see it's true.

I agree... ;) a IIIG set imho has 3 main "flavors"

- "the honest" : body with Elmar 2,8

- "the fine" : body with Summicron collpsible

- "the ultratasty" : body with Leicavit and Summilux LTM :)
