Csacwp Posted August 20, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently acquired an APO Summicron 50mm to replace my Summilux ASPH, and I'm finding it much harder to focus. With the Summilux I nail the focus every time, but the Summicron APO has a much stiffer focus wheel that is harder to manipulate, especially using one finger on the tab. Even when everything appears to be aligned in my rangefinder, the end image is not always perfectly in focus, and at times it feels like there is much less room for error when focusing. It's quite frustrating since I am sometimes missing the focus just slightly on shots that I would nail with the Summilux. Has anybody else had this experience with the APO? Advertisement Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Hi Csacwp, Take a look here APO 50mm hard to focus?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Exodies Posted August 20, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 20, 2016 I've not had that experience. Use a tripod and Liveview to check the rangefinder accuracy at various distances, various apertures. Record the results and take the data to your dealer.
dugby Posted August 20, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2016 My situation using an M240 is the complete opposite to yours. With my ASPH 50 Lux, the focussing is much more stiffer than my APO. I always get accurate focussing with my APO, but usually miss focus withe Lux.
jaapv Posted August 20, 2016 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2016 Isn't it a good idea to have Leica adjust the focusing mechanism on your Summilux then? It is a known problem area of the lens. Adjusting the APO of the OP seems a good idea as well, although new lenses can loosen up when used for a while. AFAIK Leica lenses are still assembled and tolerance-matched by hand, so there can be individual variations.
mon10a Posted August 20, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 20, 2016 No problem with stiffness or calibration with my APO 50. I purchased mine in person because someone else reported (probably on this forum) a stiff focus ring. m
lct Posted August 20, 2016 Share #6 Posted August 20, 2016 [...] the Summicron APO has a much stiffer focus wheel that is harder to manipulate, especially using one finger on the tab [...] It should not. And don't believe your dealer if he/she claims that this is normal, that suffice it to use it for a couple or days/months or whatever blah blah. One finger should suffice with any tabbed Leica lens, let alone with the most expensive 50/2 ever made. Welcome to the forum BTW
