SD Card Failure

I use a 32gb Toshiba Flashair wifi-enabled SD card in my C-Lux that's always in my pocket. This afternoon I took a photo then attempted to connect to the card with my phone to download it. The phone would not connect so I put the card into my PC only to find all that was on it was a single 3.6gb file that Windows couldn't do anything with.

Interestingly when I put the card back in the camera and took another photo the camera created all the correct folders and saved the latest picture. Obviously I will never trust the card again, I would hate that to happen right after a series of photos that I couldn't repeat.

Fortunately I am paranoid about backups, the only photos I lost were four that I took today, everything else is on at least four other drives, including one I keep off site..

My point is, SD cards do fail, back up regularly!

And good reason to consider using smaller cards than 32gb....especially with such small picture file size....one of the major benefits of cards versus film canisters.

I used to use this card in my Nikon DSLR but transferred it to this camera when I sold everything Nikon. I agree that 32gb is overkill but I really just use it as another drive to save my images on, I never delete from the SD card, just download the new ones.

Having said that, I did just order a 5 pack of 8gb cards to replace it.

Not about 'overkill'; rather it concerns the possibility of card failure (or loss), meaning less images to lose.....yet still enormous amount compared to film days.  Even better to have a camera with dual card slots for instant back-up.
