My first day owning a Leica - need grip and loop

Hi

I am thrilled today to have received my first ever Leica. Currently selling all my Canon gear on eBay to pay for my second hand M-E with 35mm Summicron.

Taken about 10 photos before work and I love it already. I'm finding it impossible though to find out when grip accessory works with the M-E that I can use the hand loop on. I plan to get back into Macro with the 90mm f4.0 one day and possibly the 21mm Super Elmar.

Can anyone shed any light for me please?

Any other accessories you'd recommend would be appreciated too.

Alex

My own experience with the Leica grip plate was not too great. But then again I've heard it praised by many. I think it depends quite a lot on the size of one's hand. I think it'd probably be better with a bigger hand?

For my own use I much prefer using the camera with the leather case and a hotshoe thumb grip.

A DSLR hand strap that attaches to the side and bottom lugs of the camera probably won't work well on the M-E with its bottom plate completely detachable.

I remember seeing some finger loop that attaches just to the lug on the side of the camera. That should give you more choices for other accessories such as handgrip thumb grip or leather case,

i have had the "Thumbie" for two years and love it.  Easy to install, high quality material, and keeps the hotshot free if you ever need it.  I believe that the maker, Steve Barnet, is a member on this forum and can be reached directly via email at barnet@globalnet.co.uk.  Otherwise, you can buy it on eBay:

Good luck and congrats!

I have the Leica grip for my M9P  - and almost never use it. Just occasionally if I have the big and heavy 75/1.4 on the camera and I'm using it in portrait mode - i.e. vertically - it can be a big help. Normally though my Thumbie does the job brilliantly on its own and the camera feels like an extension of my hand. I should think Steve would be able to make a Thumbie to match the grey of your lovely M-E, even if he doesn't have one immediately in stock.

Thanks all. Appreciate all the feedback.

I've looked at all of your suggestions with thanks. Sadly it looks like there's no Leica-way to get a finger loop on the M-E. I've found this guy http://www.leicatime.com/ and I love his frenetic website and the products look beautiful. There's a grey grip he's engineered for the M-E but still no thread for a finger loop, which is all I'm after to be honest.

That aside, I'm loving the camera and here are some of my first pics.

As you've discovered the finger loop is not available for the M9/M-E as it was first introduced into production with the M240 multi function grip (although there was a finger loop included with the M9 Titanium camera, but that's an expensive route to go just to get a finger loop!)

One possible way could be to use the Really Right Stuff BM9 plate and grip, and then thread the grip so you could attach the finger loop to it. Not sure how well this would work and it might be an expensive experiment to try..... personally I find the ThumbsUp works just as well and I can walk around all day with my thumb supporting the camera. I also of course have the strap wrapped around my wrist to provide extra 'insurance'.

Regarding the Leicatime cases, many people here swear by them, and I ordered one for my M-E when I first got it, but stopped using it within a couple of weeks. I found it gave too much extra bulk to the camera and wasn't overly impressed with the quality of the stitch work. But maybe I was just unlucky, as I said, many others love his products.

My advice - get the ThumbsUp, a decent strap (the Artisan and Artist silk cord is great for wrapping around the wrist), and spend some time learning the best way to support the camera when carrying it. Nice first results - enjoy the camera!

???

There have been various solutions around for ages.

Here is a simple but effective finger loop for Leica. I never tried it, as I don't like finger loops.

I prefer the following solution, It lives permanently on my M as it makes camera and hand one unit whilst shooting.

You need the Leicatime bottom plate with door if you use it on an M240, but it will fit on the ME without additions.

Bonus: You have an Arca-Swiss plate at the same time. (and cannot lose the bottom plate when changing batteries on the ME  ):

  • 3 weeks later...

I have an Angelo Pelle half case and a grey ThumbsUp combination which makes my ME more comfortable than my Canon 5D2, Here is a photo of me with the ME taken by Pierre Seidler who had the same case and an M9.
