Gents I looking to purchase an R lens, and found a few I liked but for sale in different Continents.

I'm in the US and would like to hear from some of you who have purchased from e.g. Japan, Germany, or Australia, that is with regards to costs to import items like Lenses or even an R Body, and such.

Is there e.g. A cost limit below which you don't pay anything, and above a fortune?? Or???

Thanks in advance

Depends on the value of the item being imported..... I think up to $800 you don't have to pay anything - check http://m.dutycalculator.com/country-guides/Import-duty-taxes-when-importing-into-the-United-States/ for more details.

Fwiw, I have just spent some time looking at R lens prices in Japan, and I think you will find better deals in Germany at the moment due to a better exchange rate.....

I've bought a LOT from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Germany, and ironically the only place in the world I have ever had any problems importing photographic equipment is from the U.S.

And even then I got the impression the problem lay more with the person sending the goods (or deciding not to send the goods as it turned out - long story) than with the system itself. The seller didn't seem to have much if any experience of international postage or shipping, wasn't aware of the various options or carriers, and didn't seem interested in finding out much either, preferring instead on trying to explain how it wasn't possible to post small, comparatively heavy items like lenses from the USA to England.

Always good to hear from someone who has real experience.

I think that I will make a go at it and see what happens! I looked at the link and hope that you are right that it will give no problem as long as the value is under $800

Thanks again

I've sent my niece in Salt Lake USA lots of cameras and lenses up to $1500 value from the UK and they didn't incur customs/import duty - TTBOMK all photographic cameras/lenses are duty exempt when imported from UK into the USA. The only problems encountered were delivery firms leaving packages on the doorstep. Importing from USA to UK is a different matter and I always get 'stung' for duty and VAT and collection fees - unless prepaid in USA.
