Robinyuill Posted August 1, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there. This may be a long shot but is there any way to tell the age of the battery from the design of the markings on it? I've two batteries and one is newer and I need to identify it. Thanks. Robin. Advertisement Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Hi Robinyuill, Take a look here M240 battery question.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
edwardkaraa Posted August 1, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 1, 2016 (edited) Yes, the manufacturing date is imprinted on the side in weeks and years. For example, 1214 means week 12, year 2014. Edited August 1, 2016 by edwardkaraa
Robinyuill Posted August 1, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted August 1, 2016 Thanks. I see an imprint on the black plastic near the terminals of 4515VB on on battery and 0213VB on the label of the other. May be safe to assume the 4515 is the newest then. It's just I'm trading in the camera for a Monochrom and want to keep the battery I bought as a newer spare. Thanks again. edwardkaraa Posted August 1, 2016 Share #4 Posted August 1, 2016 That is correct Robin. You're most welcome.
sblutter Posted August 1, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 1, 2016 My new battery (bought 4 months ago) doesn't have it - the old does, from 4512
ramarren Posted August 1, 2016 Share #6 Posted August 1, 2016 Doesn't help for existing situation, but for the future: Whenever I buy a battery, I mark it with the date I first charge it. I also number my batteries (usually have three for each camera) to ensure that I always use them in rotation and none sit unused for long periods.

edwardkaraa Posted August 2, 2016 Share #8 Posted August 2, 2016 My new battery (bought 4 months ago) doesn't have it - the old does, from 4512 That's strange. The newest battery I have is manufactured early this year and it still has the imprint.
Robinyuill Posted August 2, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted August 2, 2016 I know I should have marked the battery as new & old etc and I thought the serial numbers might have been enough to identify them. The 4515VB is imprinted on the plastic case and the 0213VB is printed on the metal label. The only other difference is the label under the recycling logo. One has 'INCA tm' the other a triangle with a tick. It's not the end of the world if I keep the wrong one but it would be nice if I kept the newest battery. Thanks again. Always a font of information.
Tailwagger Posted August 2, 2016 Share #10 Posted August 2, 2016 That's strange. The newest battery I have is manufactured early this year and it still has the imprint. Which is also strange my first battery is marked 2113VB whereas the one I purchased in January has no date marking.
John Sheridan Posted August 7, 2016 Share #11 Posted August 7, 2016 The position of the manufacture date has changed on more recent batteries. It is now located on the terminal end of the battery.
Exodies Posted August 7, 2016 Share #12 Posted August 7, 2016 Thank goodness for that. I was always irritated by the position of the old date.

Robinyuill Posted August 9, 2016 Author Share #15 Posted August 9, 2016 Thanks. That ties in with some other info to confirm which one is old and which is newest.
ibramr Posted September 5, 2016 Share #16 Posted September 5, 2016 Greetings. And while we are on this subject, did anyone used this source for a battery. The link below is one of several currently on eBay, and is chosen randomly. Prices seem to be very low, and authenticity is questioned. Please share your experience. Thank you. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine-Original-Leica-BP-SCL2-Battery-M10-M240-M-P240-battery-14499-1800mAh-/331954926359?hash=item4d4a0e3317:g:gh4AAOSwxg5XxVHp
jaapv Posted September 5, 2016 Share #17 Posted September 5, 2016 Well, he appears to be selling genuine batteries.
stevieg Posted September 6, 2016 Share #18 Posted September 6, 2016 If those are genuine, does this mean: 1) the new M doesn't use the same battery, so old stock is being sold off? 2) reduced sales of the current M resulting in fewer batteries being sold, so time for a discount? Mmmm....
jaapv Posted September 6, 2016 Share #19 Posted September 6, 2016 Batteries have a limited shelf life, so Leica has limited stock and has them remanufactured as needed; will do so in batches for at least a decade after production of the camera ends. It is more likely that somebody got hold of a batch that is past its shelf life or second choice rejects. Or did a surprisingly good fake, One would need to compare side by side for that. Or.. more charitable, a batch was close to its sell-by date and made it onto the free market.
Olsen Posted September 15, 2016 Share #20 Posted September 15, 2016 My latest battery has no production date mark at all. Something new?
