Still defaults to L100 0001 with a firmware upgrade ......

Just how often do I need to point out this is just plain stupid ....... totally unnecessary and easy to remedy.

There is now a reminder to save profiles ..... perhaps an option to retain current image numbering is not beyond the abilities of a software coder ......

Main reason for the upgrade is to be compatible with the LIS 3.4 and LR Plugin software.

They do seem to have improved to coding as usage seems to be a bit zippier.

Yeah... one wonders how hard this could be...  As an IT guy myself I almost consider this to be blatant disrespect for its customers from Leica's part.

Who imports their images into LR or just onto their computer using the camera image id?

I think that is stupid.

You surely have a workflow system that brings each image into your "system" with a meaningful "name"

I do. And perhaps it's stupid to you. Not to me.

But, if you insist...

remove the SD card with the last numbered image on. Put a spare SD into slot one - nothing in slot two.

Format, and add the update file to it and re-insert in slot one.

Do the upgrade. save profiles. reset the camera.

Restore the original SD card with the last image.

Take another shot.... guess what? the new image is still in the original sequence!

Ta Da!

Don't blame Leica... Rejoice in them!

Excellent. That's how I'd expect it to work.

I can't get this to work.

It worked with the M9 but I have tried every possible variation of resets/reset image numbering etc etc with the Q and SL and it will not restore the original number sequence.

Perhaps you are doing some slight variation that I have missed ...... I would be grateful if you could advise ....

.... oh and just because you use a different workflow to others doesn't mean the rest of us are stupid .....  :(

My way is the highway and everybody else is stupid... FWIW, I don't use LR...

No offense but if Fuji can figure out how to save all of your settings (not only the numbering) and automatically restore them during the upgrade, so should Leica.  It is not rocket science.  Perhaps Leica needs to hire a few developers from Fuji.

As much as one might love Leica (I also have 5 bodies) nobody gets better from ignoring or denying their shortcomings...

I actually left the card with the last picture in the camera and added the upgrade file to that card.  It didn't work though.  I see you are doing it slightly differently so I will give that a try next time.

The thing that is truly silly is that after 999 images, the firmware still moves to a new directory on the current card, incrementing the directory number by 1, leaving the 4th digit in the file numbering unused.  So the sequence in my set up goes  S0010999, S0020001, S0020002.  They seem to have gotten this little routine from the same supplier that gives Fuji its two chip support.  But Fuji starts all file names with DSCF, using the 5th digit for a directory number, leaving only 3 digits for the unique individual filename.  Surely Leica could have done better by now.

And yes, I use the filenames, and don't use LR or its wonderful data management utilities.

Sorry everyone if I offended you, I know there are more workflows than people !

I upgraded as I said above, not knowing it would do that, but it worked for me. I did restore the profiles when asked.

Another way to do this after updating and restoring your profiles is to take a picture, put the SD card in you computer and rename the file with the last file number (or any number you want). Don't save the file, just rename it. Then put the SD card back in the camera and take another picture. The new picture will have the next sequential number. You can then delete these pictures if you don't want them or re-format the card. The numbering is now reset.

This was my first firmware update so I wasn't aware of the problem until after I had updated and reformatted the card. Renaming on the computer worked for me.

THANK YOU LEICA!

At last just before the update it asked me do I want to save my profiles and immediately afterwards do I want to load them back!

Great this was one of my most wanted upgrades, so thank you very much indeed.

It seems to work fine for me as well.  Thank you!

Still doesn't work unless you have a default folder of L100 ....... anything else and it creates a new one .... either L100 or increments to L101.

This is my 13th Leica digital body (no, I don't still have all 13) ..... and to differentiate them I have the folder numbers set as L100 XXXX, L200 XXXX, L300 XXXX ....... and we are now on L130 XXXX (which has to be laboriously set by re-setting the numbering and taking a photo 30 times)

I have managed this easily with the 'formatting a card, renaming on the computer, resetting the camera then using the card in the camera' ...... and it does continue with whatever sequence you want.

Things went astray with the M, and progressively worse with each new camera till with the Q and SL when the numbering doesn't behave in a sensible way at all.

I settled on this with the M9 and Monochrom and it was dead simple. Several hundred thousand images later I am loathe to start fiddling about renumbering just because Leica cannot implement a system where the camera counts properly .......

Perhaps try PhotoMechanic http://www.camerabits.com ?

Its a great industrial strength bit of software that many newspapers use across Europe to download files..

Its a very fast RAW file browser, keeper selector too. basically its the bit of software to use before Lightroom/C1Pro.

If cameras are out of sync time wise it will resync them back up so files appear in the correct order

It can ingest multiple SD/CF cards at once, check the file with the original on the card and keep track of the file even if you have renamed it (so you don't download it twice if you haven't formatted a card between shoots)

I use this to download and rename files, and have done for years, Leica can name its files whatever it likes

Just a idea
