Yes, I think it works because it's so decidedly odd…not only the composition, but also the peculiarity of the different elements. If the man on the right hadn't had a stick, if the partially-seen figure on the left hadn't looked like he'd been beamed down from some 1950s Douglas Sirk movie, it wouldn't work…as it is, it's a fleeting glimpse into a surreal world.
