Filters for the 28mm PC

I own two Leica R Super Angulon 28mm f/2.8 PC Lenses, each with a lens hood and B+W 74mm GLAS 010 UV-HAZE FILTER COATED. I special ordered the B+W filters from Helix Camera in Chicago (closed in 2013). Each filter is unmounted and held in place by the special wide-angle holder with hood [12 540]. I never attempted to try a special 67 EW pol. filter. The unmounted 74mm glass filter fits the lens hood perfectly and is held in place by the hood's accompanying threaded filter ring. I researched B+W filters, and B+W - Schneider Optics offers unmounted color, UV & IR Cut, and ND Industrial Filters, available up to 74mm diameter. Contact Schneider Kreuznach to discuss your OEM and custom requirements.

Thanks, while searching on the web I found out that the Schneider version takes the B+W 67-77 step up ring and I assume it should work also for the Leica version. That would be an easier solution as I need a set of ND filters

Hello,

Some years ago, I wanted to use generic filters on Leica PC-Super-Angulon 28mm and never found a solution.

So, I just have a try with a step-up ring Hoya 67mm to 72mm.

To screw this adapter in the S-A, the focus must be put to minimum 0.3m.

With the step-up ring , I can only focus the lens to 0.5m, not more  .

So this is useless in real life.

Sorry, I can't help either. My experience is confined to a UV filter purely for lens protection purposes. Actually on this lens I prefer not to use such a filter at all (very unusually for me). I have this theory that, at large shifts, there are some extremely oblique light rays entering the lens, and even with a parallel sided sheet of glass (for example a filter) the lateral displacement of the rays in and out may be rather more significant. Maybe this is nonsense! So I have two lens hoods, one with a B+W filter glass, the other one empty, and takes my choice.

I suspect your best bet would be to contact B+W and get the required unmounted disc cut as a one off.

I can confirm that the B+W 67/77 step-up ring fits perfectly and it allows to use all 77mm filters without limitations. Another option is Contax 70/86 filter ring which fits the 28PC perfectly. The benefit of the Contax 70/86 is that it's slides over the front on the lens instead of being screwed into place. The Contax 70/86 ring is very quick to install and remove, and can also be locked in place if wanted. As the 86mm filters are quite expensive, to work around this, it is possible to use a 86-77mm step down ring.

I have an adapter from www.Zoerk.com in Germany. It slides over the front of the lens and is secured with a screw at its side. This adapter accepts any E77 filters.

The adapter is not listed on the Zoerk website. You would have to contact Zoerk at http://www.zoerk.com/pages/contact_EUR.htm

The advantage of this adapter over a 67-77 step up ring is that the filter's position is closer to the lens and there is less risk of vignetting when shifting and using a pol filter with it.

This works with the Schneider version of the lens. To my knowledge the Leica version is the same lens.
