Grey X2

Looking to buy a new X2, found a dealer in Australia offering the best price but they only have grey. All the online reviews I read only mention silver/black & black models. So is the grey model the same in every aspect (except color) as the silver and black models?

At first guess I'd say "Grey" is actually "Silver". But just a guess. I have black, it's what I bought, but deep down I'd have been as happy with silver. Oh, and my "X2" is actually an X1, but that's OK, it's still an awesome camera.

Buy it.

Thanks for the above replies. The grey is what's known as Steel Grey, it's grey paint and I've read it scratches easily. It would be my last choice in an X2, I'd really like silver and 2nd choice black. But this Steel Grey is a couple hundred bucks cheaper so if all things are equal I'll take it and save a bit. After all it's IQ I'm primarily interested in not so much exterior appearance. But as all the reviews I read only mention silver & black I just want to make certain the grey model (which seems to have been discontinued very early on) is exactly the same in all other regards.

Perhaps look at a case as well, keeping the "damage" potential to a minimum?

Gary

Yes good idea. The damage to the paint is not really that much of an issue as I'm the sort of person who takes very good care of things I own. I have several cameras and they are all in mint condition.

Been many years since I last owned a Leica so I'm looking forward to having another one soon.

The Leica XE type 102 is silver grey and is the model that replaces the X2. Is it this one you are considering?

No, the model I'm considering is the X2, which has been discontinued but there are still lots available. It seems very few people are aware there was also a grey (steel grey) model. As far as I can tell the X2 originally appeared in silver, black & grey. But the grey was unpopular and discontinued early on. No reviews mention the grey model, but due to the lack of interest in this color the grey X2s can still be found at lower prices than the silver or black cameras.

As I've already said the grey is my last choice but all things being equal I would still get a grey model and save a couple hundred dollars. However, I just wanted to ask around first. I wouldn't want to order and pay for a grey model then find out later it was some early prototype of the X2 and dropped for reasons other than color.

Hello Bob, the Leica X-E ist technically and optically speaking identical to the X2, so it might be indistinguishable for you. It was introduced when the New X (Type 113) was introduced as a cheaper alternative to the new camera with faster lens. The X2 was released only in black and silver (press release says "The camera is available in a discreet black or elegant silver finish."), the X-E is still available new, it is only available in grey. So, when you're buying the grey one, you'll get a newer camera (by manufacturing date) than when you'd buy a silver or black one.

@SirPiet. Thanks for your reply. What has confused me is this ad for the grey X2. However, by having a very close look at the camera pictured in the ad I now see it is an X1. So this dealer has acquired a batch of old X1s and is selling them off as X2s. You are correct that the X2 came in silver & black only, whereas it was the X1 that came in 3 colors.

I was in contact with this particular company as I was very interested in buying an X2 from them. When I discovered that the camera pictured in the ad is really an X1 I sent them an email asking why their ad states X2 and the product description is X2 yet the camera displayed is an X1. They did not reply to my question but I now see they say they are out of stock.

So Bob, where to now? Bit of a let-down, having your heart set on a new X2, to find it is actually an old X1.

Let us know whet you're thinking camera wise from here. I have the "old" X1, and it's newer relation, the X-Vario. Both are awesome, but in differing price brackets, and with differing features.

But to be fair, either would be great, certainly to get another feel for the brand.

A retailer cannot sell an X1 as an X2, that would be fraudulent. I suspect they've just selected the wrong product photo on the advert (happens a lot with all sorts of products!).

Why not just phone them and ask?

No need to phone them, since I sent them an email they have changed their online ad saying they're out of stock. So there are no longer any X1 or X2 available from that particular dealer.

Sorry I didn't intend any disrespect to you or any other X1 owners. By saying "old" I only meant an earlier model. I believe the X2 has some higher specs and a couple extra features, so for that reason I prefer X2 over an X1.

After reading about all the various Leica compacts that I can afford, it's the X2 that I want most. I'm currently based in Thailand but will be back in Australia around end of this year, so I'll wait until then. Best price I've seen so far is AU$1,714

No disrespect taken, none at all. I have an old X1, it IS old, but it still works, so I am happy. The newer X-V is nicer, but larger, so it's horses for courses.

A good thing about the wait, they will only get cheaper.

There's a good forum, Singapore based, where you could easily find an X2 if you wanted, I'd be buying used as well, simply to save money.

Many thanks Gary. Any chance of a link to that S'Pore forum? I'll be buying new as I trust nobody but myself when it comes to taking care of valuable toys.

I checked out the newer X variable and it does look nice. However I'm convinced the X2 is best for me. I want a fixed focal length lens so I get right back to basics.

Lately I've started regretting getting rid of my old film cameras when the digital revolution arrived, especially when I look back at photos I took with B&W film in my old Leica.
