Hmm, a dumb no-electronics adapter - what do you think given that all S lenses fit all S bodies?

john

so is that a yes or a no? Please be more clear in your responce

Why on earth do you think it would not? I really do not understand why you ask such dumb questions...

john

Theres not such a thing as a dumb question............but it seems like you always want to reply with a dumb/negative answer. May I suggest if you don't like my questions, ignore them, in fact just add me to your ignore list so that you don't need to see my dumb questions.

Love

Question

I currently have Leica S lenses 120, 70 and 30mm

I have Hasselblad V lenses 180, 80 and 40mm would it be worth my while getting a S to V adapter so that I can use these Hasselblad lenses on my Leica S007 or Just use the V lenses on the Blad and leave it at that

Cheers mate. I didn't know they had generic adapters. I was thinking the same as you but just wondered if I was missing anything.

I would not buy one. As wonderful as the Zeiss lenses are on the analog 6x6 V System, they are not up to the standard to the S lenses (have only a look on the MTF). If you have not the money, o.k., but other reasons I can not see.

40mm: not the best V lens (if its not the newest expensive one); 80mm: cannot add anything to the 70mm. 180mm: nice lens, but the Leica Apo 180mm is soooo nice ...

I tried it with my 150 CF, 50 FE and 110 FE, not worth it.

Neil,

I'm basically using my S006 as a compact digital body for my V lenses, since I haven't committed to the system yet. I'm using one of the cheap Chinese adapters (since it's basically a dumb tube) and they work fine.  I'm sure the Leica adapter is better made (it should be, considering that it's about 8 times the price). I would recommend that you get the microprism screen - it made focussing a lot easier. Don't forget to stop down to meter and shoot. ;)

I don't see much benefit to using the 80 on the S if you already have the (superior) Leica 70mm. The 100/3.5 might be a different matter (it's a much sharper lens, particularly in the corners). On the other hand, I've had my 80 for 26 years and it has never needed a repair - which appears to be more than a lot of folks can say about their S lenses.

Which 40mm do you have? The newest V-series 40 is excellent by anyone's standards. The older ones are not that great.

The 180 is an excellent lens. Not as good as the Superachromats, but excellent nevertheless.

There's no electronics in the V-series adapter - it's just a tube with a male S bayonet on one end and a female V bayonet on the other. If you have CFE or FE lenses, it will not transmit any data from the lens to the body and you'll have to manually stop down to meter and shoot. It will work fine with the S007.

That really depends on a) how much Neil wants to use a 180mm on his (to be) S-007, and B) whether his interpretation of quality justifies the price difference between buying a $200 adapter for a MF lens that he already has, and buying a $6,800 (for non-CS) lens that he doesn't have.

For me, I'd try the adapter first to see if it's a focal length that I'm going to actually use. It has the added advantage of being a back-up so that the S can still be used whilst the S lenses are doing their regular visits to the Wetzlar hospital (I'm being intentionally obtuse there).

I use a "Metabones" V to S adapter with a Zeiss 250mm Sonnar. It works fine, but you do need to stop down after focusing as it is a "dumb" adapter.

Neil, it's not a dumb question, it's a dumb adapter i.e. no aperture actuation or electronic connection.

Also look out for second hand offerings of the original Leica adapters.

I use several Leica S adapters (Mamiya 645, Contax 645, Pentax 67), all original Leica adapters.

I also use a a genuine Mamiya made M645 to Hasselblad V adapter (can use my Hasselblad lenses on my Mamiya bodies and also via stacked adapters on the Leica S).

I have tried several other adapters and compared with the Leica adapters before I decided on the genuine Leica adapters and found that fit  and finish with the Leica S adapters is flawless.

The biggest issue with some third party adapter is that they do not hold some of the heavyweight medium format lenses tightly on the body which results in a wobble between lens and body when you focus - this I find very annoying.

I have seen genuine Leica adapters sold for less than half the price.

The Hasselblad 40mm and 80mm lenses do not make much sense to use on the Leica S.

The 180 may be interesting for portraiture and a little further reach (or as a budget option when the cost of a 180 S lens is not justified by little use of that focal length).

Generally do have most of these older legacy medium format lenses not the resolution of the Leica S lenses and only a handful of the finest samples of each of those systems do make sense performance wise.

All of them (when adapted with dumb adapters) are a real hassle to use and do not exactly conform with quick, fast camera use (you are back at stop down metering, wide open focussing, stopping down for exposure, manual focus, … ).

With some of the available lenses it is worth the sacrifice (best example for myself the Mamiya 300/2.8 APO), many are simply not worth the trouble (I would count almost all lenses into that field where Leica does make an equivalent).

One lonely exception to this may be the Contax 645 120/4 APO - a lens that offers Leica S level optical quality and does offer functionality the Leica S 120/2.5 does not (buying this by omitting auto focus).

Mate

I'm away to get an adapter..........how do I shoot with a manual lens on the S007, do I need to adjust the aperture and shutter on the lens just like it was a 503CW, and if so how do I meter, what settings do i need to set on the Leica body???
